extract: Black Sky researchers ...aim ...to incorporate aspects of Earth’s natural habitat into vessels capable of an indefinite journey through space.
This goal is almost the exact opposite of the aims of the Greens, who want to curb human aspirations to fit within what nature, in its Earthbound form, can reasonably be expected to sustain.
dichotomizing for the sake of polarizing imo
the maximum duration of human existence on Earth may depend on human culture prioritizing sustainability
but the maximum duration of Earth's lifeforms, including humans, will depend on trans-stellar travel.
I see no conflict of purpose.

That was a hard choice. Id like to have thought i was green but in reality im probably black. Im more excited by the idea of going to space or cloning animals etc when i think about it.

Once technology is advanced enough, our planet is as much of a disposable resource as any other.

No different from the left/right paradigm.

I think the two are intimately compatable AND….
...pursuing the green is going to give us the technologies to achieve the black.
maximum efficiency - high output - transportable and mutable - green housing
My favorite part of Disney's Epcot Center was the space greenhouses.
these are not, zero G watermelons….

When slavery was abolished in the United States, people were afraid that the economy would collapse. They were wondering 'who would pick the cotton', then slavery WAS abolished and the industrial revolution brought about innovations that made us a lot more productive. People couldn't see past their current society and its technological restrictions, almost as if technology is a sentient, inherent being or an object that is there and limited to what people thought was capable. Ignorant to the fact that perhaps, 100 years later, technology would evolve with society and take on forms they couldn't imagine.
They didn't figure that even THEIR OWN technological advancements are responses to outside, cultural/societal stimuli that necessated to the development of alternative technology to accomodate the form that society took at that point. And that in the future, these technological developments would progress much in the same way.
We'll be fine. We'll survive the end of our planet. We will create entire planets, entire solar systems, our own stars to perpetually feed our planets with energy, or any other artificial type of biotope that I can't even imagine. We will change ourselves, we'll genetically modify ourselves to be able to exist in the harshest conditions and we will thrive.

You think we are too advanced to experience another dark age?
Because great huge civilizations have disappeared in the past…
Mainly due to plague of some sort…
..dry spells.
Not that I'm going to worry about it…
It's not like I, large groups of concerned people, or half the worlds governments…
have any bearing on the will of a rogue scientist…
or how retarded backwards leaders handle their nuclear arsenals or trash disposal.
I can't even think like people with infinite resources.

Some societies will fall, while others will rise. Humanity was never in a dark age, only western society was and even that is debatable and when you look at what caused the "dark ages" in Europe, it's the monopoly rights on information and literacy that the clergy had. With the internet it's unlikely to happen.
We're also talking about a completely different world now. If this "global dark age" is supposed to take place, it should happen within 100 years. Technology is just moving too fast at present.
