So ye who remembers their first trip to the record shop? Who remembers the first set of tunes they picked up? Well im 24 first time i went into a record shop was when i was 18. Got my first set of decks then, the record shop was Rhythm division Roman rd Bow, the first lot of tunes i bought was, Shola Ama Imagine, Zomm n D.B.X Coming again, Nesha Whats it gonna be, Arcitects Body Groove, and a few more just cant remember. But ye big up whoever come up with the invention of the TurnTable, deffinatly the best thing i have ever spent my money on

First record shop I went to was called Modern Music. At the time it was really the only place in the area where you could get a diverse selection of electronic music. It was also somewhat of a trendy place....very clean, very orderly, semi-snobbish help staff. I got the feeling that alot of people kinda came into that place to pose rather than buy records.

Anyway, I picked up a random sampling of drum'n'bass records, since I didn't really know enough to immediately grab what I wanted. I figured all that was going to come later...I just needed records to beatmatch with. Most of those tunes I've since forgotten about, but I did pick up a few choice bits that i still rate as good tunes:

- Moving Fusion remix of "4 days" (had just promoed)
- Cause 4 Concern - "Show U Something / Forever"
- Peshay - "Truly"

That never became a regular spot for me, and I mostly bought records online until I started going to Music Liberated, which was the first shop I fell in love with. It was pretty much everything that the other shop wasn't: dirty, disorganized, and with some of the friendliest (and funniest) staff. They sold everything from hip-hop to house to dnb to jazz. Also had a huge baltimore club section, and the owner put out club tunes on his own label. Alot of times when I would go there after work I would hear producers in there playing out their latest tunes over the house system. It was a place where music really felt alive, and a bunch of different scenes kind of collided into one.

Sadly, one night, Bernie (the owner) died in a car crash on the expressway....and the shop closed soon after. I still really miss that place.

In the fourth grade, I used to carry this little yellow box to school and played 45's at recess when it was raining - stuff like J.Geils Band Centerfold/Rage in the Cage, Brick House by the Commodores, Apache/Rappers Delight by Sugerhill Gang, Diana Ross Upside Down... the local Boscovs, which is basically a huge department store - had a big 45 wall - I spent hours in front of that thing in between the stamp collecting section and the Sea Monkeys...I was 9 years old.

my first proper record store was Lou's Records in Encinitas, CA. I was prolly 12 or 13

my older brother took me and I was so excited I nearly shit myself

i was 13 i think when i went to brussels with a few friends.
we got into this "one clothing shop that also sold records"
i thought the decks weren't ment to listen so i got double j from john b & justyce.
getting home i didn't like the specific mix, even though i liked a similar which i had on tape, sold the record years after.
second experience was much better, a lot of records at half price and even at 1 euro just to get rid of them, in another shop.

1995. deep grooves records in st louis, MO USA.

i had saved up two weeks worth of paychecks.

all i remember was that i picked up slam "positive education" double pack (with remixes) and a crap ton of relief records (including some green velvet shizz). past that i can't remember.

it was a lovely day, indeed. my hometown had no record store.

14 yrs old straight after football on a Wednesday, hopping on the tube to the (original) Deal Real Records off Berwick St, Soho, London

all independent hip-hop at the time - couldnt get those tunes anywhere else

still magic - the feeling of having bought a record two weeks ago on promo, then watching someone come in talking about this tune which is now sold out and no-one can get hold of!! feeling like superman (never really goes away!)

My first real trip to the record store was to I believe MixMusic in Madison WI in '98. We went down there to go to a party and left early to spend the day and to hit up that shop. I started spinning house and bought a few classics without knowing...

"Chicago Southside" by CZR
"Deep Into the Vibe" by CZR and
"Spin Spin Sugar (Armand's Dark Garage Mix)" by the Sneaker Pimps
and one or two others I cant think of right now...

That shop was only ok, but it was way better than what I had in Green Bay. There we had "The Exclusive Company" which was mostly a punk shop. Buying electronic music there was really hit or miss, no listening stations or anything and I didnt have internet access at the time so I had to go by feel...

When I moved to CO and was able to go shopping in Denver was one of the best things that ever happened to my collection. Twist and Shout in Denver is like Amoeba is in SF and LA.

bought a Ready for Dead 12" (on classic Scot house label Limbo) - i'd only gone in to get a tape pack and some flyers to stick on my wall, but i felt the pressure and bought the first thing i heard on the shop system that I liked.

I went to one in Oxford and like the fucking prick I was bought 'The Odyssey' and a Clipz tune

16 years old, had just loaned 300 from me mum to pay for a set of PDX-2000, with the rest coming from my part time job. After shopping with a couple of mates, i popped into Probe in Liverpool.

Didnt buy much i dont think:

Pete Rock and CL - TROY / Straighten it out (re-press)

Not a very good shop, but it only got better when i managed to mission into Manchester and down to London quite regular, big up Fat City and Mr Bongos.

oh ELECTRONIC MUSIC - I was already into drum and bass when I got my first set of tables and was at college in the deep south, Savannah Georgia, so I was getting tunes mail order from this kid named Scott Manion - had a little set up called Dubshack out of Chicago.

I'm not sure as to the first physical store I stepped into - probably 611 in Philadelphia or one of/all of those joints in the Orlando, Florida area..

I'm lying - Dj Norplant, Jon Nor from Chicago?DC? had a little spot in Savannah..little corridor in some chicks clothing bit - sold breaks and house..called Standard Records...my memory is SHOT YO!! We used to pick our own tunes off that watts edie list or something...circa 94

Caught the bug so hard i was working in a record store the next summer, too young to be paid legally, cash in hand only.

Hmv 1989 went with my moms to get the MC Hammer album,almost bought do the Bart man as well.

First trip solo was when i was 12 1993 i purchased some random Hardcore tape pack.Think it was Dreamscape.Arcade Records Nottingham,shop is gone now think it's a Bar with some ponce boxes built on top.
First 12" i bought was in 1995 Alex Reece - Pulp Fiction from selectadisc Nottingham.Had been to my first Rave the previous year and finally managed to get a turntable ( not decks just some crusty old beltdrive)

i dont remember the exact first time but i remember the "era" ... being really young and just walking in, tunes every where, some musty smell in the air, everyone was really cool and moody, obviously these days the word for that is knob jockeys

edit: oh yeh, first place was reckless records in soho if i remember rightly, now the ownership has been replaced by some fuckin emo nerds who dont even have a turntable for u to hear ur tunes!

..i was 14 i think. my mate andy had just got a piar of decks for his birthday, so i went with our mate down to A&D Sounds in mitcham and picked him up a 2nd Protocol doublepack on OZ Recordings (old breakbeat garage label). Bought myself a copy aswell cos it was so sick, i didnt even have decks yet!

that was my first record shop I use to go to when I lived out there, back in the 90's.
Remember it was Modern Music and half of the store was called something else because it was "club" clothing......

there DnB was shit, i remember goin in there and they had only 2 crates for DnB.
I would always ask if they had ragga, and would always get a snobby reply "No one plays that stuff anymore..." (This was '97 and tech step was in full swing)
