MASSIVE ATTACK - TEARDROP(GnarGnar Remix) (FEEDBACK PLEASE)

Hey guys . New here, but I like what I see, looking forwarding to diving in and seeing what this place is all about.

Would really appreciate some feedback on this new track. It's a very heavy remix of Teardrop by Massive Attack. If you're not familiar with the original, its a very chilled out, atmospheric, hip hopy, somber, sad type of tune. I really wanted to make it heavy, over the top, bursting with energy, psychedelic, but keep that dreamy and ethereal feel. It's not quite finished yet, still tweaking some things, and it's not mastered or fully mixed down.

Post your song and I will for sure return some solid feedback .

Please try to point out atleast one thing you don't like

Drums are quite quiet in the mix, and I'd suggest another look at the mixdown as some of the more melodic elements of the original and the vocal are almost inaudible...particular the vocal around 3m10s I could hardly hear.

Ordinarily I'd be dead against someone remixing Teardrop, but honestly this isnt that bad. However, the mixdown does need another look to stop the main samples of the original from being swamped by splashy midrange snares and synths.

Thanks a bunch for the feedback man :)

You are absolutely right about the mix - I haven't given this thing a proper mixdown yet at all. I'm still finishing up the last bits of arrangement. Also, I am without a sub, so I'm probably going to get this thing mixed professionally. I knew the vocals were much too quiet and sit too far back in the mix, but I never thought the drums were too quiet. I'll give it another listen, thanks a bunch man :)

When you say drums do you mean the kick and the snare? Can you elaborate on what you think is wrong with their mix? I kinda feel like the snare is quiet, but a part of me likes that, as there is a loooot of other mid range stuff going on, I like a sort of low, punchy snare. Helps keep the sub bass elements in focus. What do you think?

It's as much to do with the drums having their own space within the mix as anything else. Maybe some subtractive EQing around the snare to give it space to come through when it does hit (for example, sidechaining the EQ on the synths to drop in the frequency notch the snare occupies when it hits)

Word. I never thought of that, I tend to be very careful with side-chaining, but that's a very good idea.

Just curious, because you seem to know what you're talking about, how do you feel about the part around :50 when the big drums come in. I've just had a lot of issues with this part and the buildup, and I'd be interested to know what you think of them both.

Thanks a bunch dude :).

Build up sounds fine...given the vibe of the original (and your remix) you're not after a full blown build up with cascading snares and whatever. So what you've got suits the ambiance of the track around it, IMO.

Personally i don't like this. Teardrop should not be remixed, it cant be improved on. Taking the sample to one side the actual track is nice. What you did with the vocal around four minutes is really nice and doesn't sound like its from 'Teardrop'. Have a good ol' mixdown and get the frequencies tightened up as the mix is flat and i can feel any low end.

Could you make the track work without the sample?

You know man, I really have thought about taking out the sample and reworking it entirely. Seeing as not only did I change the melody entirely, I also changed the key. So, it really is mostly my shit going on. I do like the sample a lot though. Annnddd I've worked maybe 200 hours on this track, and it would kill me to undergo more and more reworking of it. I also feel like it would need a strong vocal to work, and I don't know any singers.

Whatre your thuoghts?

I can relate to where your at with the tune and the time you have spent on it. In that case id suggest mixing it down and enjoying the fruits of your labor :)
