It all started with “Superfreak”, pots, pans, and chopsticks. Then he found the drum machine at age four. Now he’s tearing up the electronic music scene in every bass
slapping, mind bending, brain melting way possible. Mad Zach is a force to be reckoned with. He founded CustomMidiControllers.com in 2010 and now is a major contributor to the San Francisco based blog and website, DJTechTools: creating and uncovering new artists through his weekly “sound packs”, contests and tutorial videos. Zach currently resides in Berlin, Germany, regularly circumnavigating the globe for choice shows and exotic sonic expeditions.
But let’s forget the professional resume and focus on what makes Zach “Mad”. He specializes in hand made, good old fashioned, organic beats. That means he makes this shit live. Yeah, you read that right Live. His influences transcend time and genre; pulling from such greats as Dr. Dre, the RZA, Billy Holiday, Deep Forest and Eprom. An
audiophile and “burritovore”, Zach craves vinyl, analog synths, and what he describes as “weird old keyboards”. He’s had several releases with SF based glitch hop label, Multi Music, including the sophomore 2009 full length, “Wolf Spiders”, as well as 2011’s “Devil Dancehall” and in 2012, “Hypercube”. More recently, MZ has worked with labels like Hamburg's Saturate Records and Berlin based bass label, Robox Neotech. Zach is currently working on stimulating the world’s earlobes with recent remixes and a new collaborative project with the amazing, G Jones.

Long story short, I mostly make and play Bass Music in general such as Grime, Hiphop and Dubstep
I came up on the standard diet of HipHop, Turntablism, 80ties and 90ties Elektro, as well as lots of Dub, Jungle, IDM and world music, so I’ve got as many influences as anyone else I guess. But it took me a while to figure out what it was about the music I love, and really it’s just a certain vibe… The shit that grabs me most has always been wired mostly out of pitch but still danceable, it’s colorful and spacey but with lots late night energy, it’s dissonant and experimental and raw but still made for the clubs.
So that’s what I aim for when I’m making tunes or digging for them. I’m a producer as well as a DJ as I started Djing and producing at the same time, but to be honest I can’t really say one or the other is more important to me. I love other people’s music too much to ever just play my own trax. But I also love producing, struggling to make that mythical perfect tune, you know? I know I don’t put out enough tunes, sorry about that… I’m working on it though. Even after all these years of producing I still feel like the new kid though, I’m still learning about music, and to be honest I hope that never changes.
