An abandoned mall in Bangkok has been overtaken by fish

There's something particularly eerie about an abandoned shopping mall. Perhaps it's the stark contrast from its intended purpose: to see such a sterile place once designed to entice throngs of shoppers into its doors, now so completely devoid of any human life, dilapidated and darkened with time. It's basically the very definition of post-apocalyptic. But in the case of the (now ironically named) New World shopping mall in Bangkok, Thailand, abandonment by humans doesn't equate with lifelessness. The mall, which reportedly caught fire in 1999 (rumored to be arson by a competitor), has since flooded with several feet of water and become a paradise for koi and catfish.


As seen in these photos from chef / travel writer Jesse Rockwell, the resulting "urban aquarium" is at once delightful and surreal. Rockwell writes on his travel, photography, and food blog A Taste of The Road that someone deliberately introduced the fish into the vacant mall, but that locals in Bangkok's old town "discourage people from visiting it." He says he had to wait for a policeman to leave before entering, which makes his resulting images all the more breathtaking.

That looks amazing, someone using it as a breeding area maybe? Koi of this size could sell for 50-100€ a piece.

There's a squat in the middle of Leeds Uni. Right in the fucking middle of the campus :lol:

Then, there's an old bowling alley by the river Aire that gets converted to a rave warehouse every so often. Fucking weird dodgy place, right mix of Gs, hippies, students, dregs, and other randoms...

wtf how have i never seen that squat, you sure it's still there?

also never heard of the bowling alley :( does it have a name?

The squat isn't obvious, it was there seven years ago so it might have been cleared. Funny though, loads of hippies took over a building in the backstreets and just had parties and stuff. Twas a bit weird in there, some dude (probably a student) just walked up to me, took the carton of orange juice I was holding out of my hand, drank some, gave it back and walked off. Never said a word :lol: my mates graffed up the bedrooms and one of their dads knew the hippy owners.

The bowling alley is probably cleared. I can't remember exactly but it was near the Armouries, maybe it was called Hollywood Bowl or something? Used to have parties there as a kid, had a laser battle ground and everyting

ha fair, i'll keep an eye out for it when i'm next on campus. was it in the terrace buildings or further back near the hospital?
