Can't record audio.

I recently got a new computer and I installed Live 8 on it. Unfortunately I am unable to record audio, I was able to record audio with no problems when I used live on my laptop. Midi works and samples work fine.
I was wondering if some soundcards are unable to record audio? If so, I think this may be the case with the factory soundcard currently installed on the PC. Would buying an external soundcard fix this problem?

If your onboard card has line in,then mut be some settings problem...

Lets be honest it's not really a good idea to produce of the internal pc soundcard. If you are on budget there are loads of decent cheap soundcards out there. The buffer and latency from the internal soundcard drivers are jokes for starters.

Agreed.
I might be moving abroad soon so I just opted for a cheap desktop to tide me over until then. Thanks for the advice.
