Doesn't seem like there is that many of them. Artists that do an actual LIVE set rather than DJing or just releasing tunes. Is that a dubstep/130/post dubstep thing, or are there some that I'm just not thinking of?
Like there are loads of artists in techno and house, you've got guys like Paradox in DnB...but not so much in Dubstep or similar?
[EDIT - someone has just mentioned dubkasm to me]

maybe this could be because one of the major differences with dubstep as opposed to dub was losing the PA approach, to move instead more toward DJ'ing with an MC. they took the dubby sound and started playing it the way tunes are played in a garage rave rather than a dub night

Nice interpretation

Might have misunderstood, but hasn't The Bug always done this?

I agree but then lose the dub and then manage with your bumming step
....
but seriously -dj culture is not in itself a musical culture it's jukebox/ tv anchor culture infused with bits of superficial journoey traits mixed in as an excuse to be able to borrow seemingly authentic culture artifacts that are usually jamaican and then sort of call them their own.
It's like 'finding love' in Bangkok (no offence Thailand).
But is still acceptable to people despite being an easier way less demanding way out (way up).
Ceephax is basicly a live fella.
Venetian snares and soundmurderer had a 'live' tracker set up like Paradox for a while.
Most of the rephlex dudes.

All fine artists (I'd also chuck in Squarepusher to that list)
So Dubstep doesn't lend itself as well as other genres? Noise, DnB, techno etc.

Imo and this is ofcourse out of line
but i would argue dubstep would fit much better because the tempo is slow enough that you could bang it out live - even on instruments tbh.
Which again puts it in a bad light. .. considering the other genres.
fx are usually very delay -orientated, which just work better when either pushed or when they feed on their own like in dub...
and almost all automations could be punched in on the fly, as opposed to it's big bro dnb and in that way define itself more.
sorry don't mean to offend specific people..
to me it's like this
football = dnb
ultimate frisbee = dubstep

so no, imo it 's the same matter as always. that dubstep and the producers that defined themselves via this sound lacked imagination and the fact that the shift in tempo was appealing to superficial dejay scenesters and the net turning viral at the level it did at that time, just meant the scope was butthole sized from the get go.
Interesting.
And more than a littler controversial.

Stand by your convictions, you wetbag!
If you feel the scene is lacking decent live acts because it's all scene head bandwagon jumpers with their cracked DAWs knocking out identikit tunes without a thought to live play, then go with it.

I'm not sure I respect people using non pirated daws, so you understand why there's a need to draw a line somewhere and not go on about revolution in every subject, despite belief.
Most people would think it was wrong to say that it's our responsibility to pirate any hollywood film you have an interest in seeing for example. It just closes off discussion, despite people understanding that the way money is spent is entirely wrong. .

does anyone else fully not get live sets
i dont get more hyped by seeing a guy furiously stab buttons on a light up box than i do hearing a well thought out and mixed dj set

Doesn't Shackleton do live sets?

I don't get the appeal of live sets really
I just wanna hear tunes mashed out on a fuck off big system, mixed nicely, new tunes, good selection etc. I don't care about staring at the DJ.
I guess some live sets like shackletons are well renowned though. But yeah, for the most part dance music really doesn't need live sets.

I like it when they use actual audio generating hardware. Can include a computer as well, but
just a computer and a controller or two is just like a DJ set to me and then it just completely depends.
Real live PA's, as they are often called nowadays, are simply commonplace in techno. Step sequencers are the backbone of the genre, so to me it makes sense that a lot of producers reach for
that same tool when performing live.
I've seen countless great live sets really.

Definitely not. Live music is pretty bad in this era. But it can be done.
Still the role of deejaying and specifically a spectrum of rules has influenced production to the point where a live setup is utopic. The culture states that we in practise do a bit of composition and then mix some other peoples tunes. It sort of belongs in the same elegant conceptual world as something like GTL does when we consider the possibilities.
I don't know if it was the drummer from def leopard that caused all this but...
