what you need to make it in the music "business" is..
an image
&
the ability to produce this image (video,sound,images,ideas,beliefs,swag,blahh..)
if you are heading for a live show musical career you need to think more about your "album cover"than whether or not this bass is better than the next. if it works for the production of your image, it works. this is where being a visionary is so crucial, you need to know what you want and if it has a chance of working for you in the way you want it to (this also goes for all areas musically, imagery, videosnshit u name it ur whole mofuckin image counts on your ability to imagine it first).
think of your self more as a compiler of all this shit for your image rather than just a music producer. the job makes more sense that way i think. gotta think bigger picture dont get tide down studyin about what a growl filter looks like if your job isnt going to be telling mofuckas what it looks like u kno? idk...
neways peace glhf!
(last tidbit actually very last im casper to dsf after this to much brainspace O.o being taken up by it but.. this is much easier to assemble if you know yourself and what you want in life. and at the end of the day its all trial and error. if you cant learn from your mistakes you wont make any progress. ok im done

Well, it is true that subconsciously people will probably look upon your music more favorably if you have decent artwork and have an active social media presence. I hear so many talented producers on sound cloud who could easily multiply their audience by 10 if they put some effort into branding themselves.
Now of course the music is most important and you won't get anywhere trying to promote half-assed music, but just making good music alone isn't enough. People sometimes say "just make quality tunes and the listeners will come" and maybe that's true if you get lucky and happen to have some major blogger or promotion network pick up one of your tracks out of the blue... but sitting back and waiting for results is almost never the way that successful people approach anything in life.
So yeah... I definitely wouldn't say sound design is a waste of time because the music has to be good... but gargoyle has a point because the image really is a crucial element in the whole thing if you want to "make it in the industry." Then again we all define "making it" differently and it isn't always defined by the amount of followers you can attract or charting on beatport or anything like that.

I only listen to eastern samoan post industrial retro-visigoth on vinyl like any self respectable musician should. Stick with your disgusting mainstream pop hits you cretin. I'm going to an underground show where we listen to a dj skin a cat while spitting rice grains onto a washboard in a toilet at 120 bpm.

It's a balance...some people are just happy making good music without the need to promote themselves or fulfil a certain image to acheive mainstream success.

This. The only person on here I've considered to be really serious about their craft recently was that guy that
joined the LA production school place and stopped posting on here

Is production school worth it if you want to be a serious producer? I don't want to derail the conversation (although maybe that has already happened anyway) but I was just wondering. Like what are they really going to teach you there that you can't find out yourself and save a lot of money?

It represents an investment of time as much as anything else. A year off studying YT videos and trying to emulate patch design, or a year in a school with industry folk talking you through things and networking opportunities?
Obviously it'd be geared towards some genres more than others.

well, pretty sure this guy is not serious now.
Also i've been looking at production schools since studying and working with IT is really depressing, but it really seems like a waste of time besides networking.
