I think it works if you leave it un opened so you can pull it out in court if anything similar comes out, having the date you decided on the idea.

Of course you aint copywrited it though
sending a copy of something to yourself, then leaving it unopened, with the intention of using to offer you protection in some thoeretical copyright infringement court case, is just completely futile. It will offer you absolutely no protection in legal terms.
As the writer of a piece of music you already hold all rights over that work, until/unless you have signed away rights to a publisher/label. This idea that somehow a sealed package offers any further protection than, say, the original files on your computer, is spurious - any proof at all of your being the composer of a given work would serve the same purpose.
At any rate, the likelihood of your tune being ripped off and then making a dodgy label millions of pounds if fucking miniscule - it is far more likely that you would already be published, or your tune had already been released in some form, which would offer all the proection of int'l copyright law anyway.
In all honesty, much more likely if a label wanted to rip you off and make their millions from your uber-tune, they would do as Sony did with UR's Knights of the Jaguar release and have it 'covered' as closely as is legally allowed (using musicology lawyers and skilled producers) and just release that instead:

this can be done without consent - at the time UR went fuckin ballistic, and started a massive hate campaign against Sony execs until they pulled the release.

Studied this and it does work, but it doesn't since a year ago? News to me... I been told to send it to yourself and then put it in a bank vault or something which is dated, that way if someone takes your track releasing it saying it's theirs, you can go to court, get them to get the bank vault CD / letter w/e and play it finding out it's your track.. get me!

The composer of the music automaticaly owns the copywright for the tune he/shes just written. The difictulty is prooving you actualy wrote the track. Should there ever be a cort case an unopened envelope like that can be submited as evidence showin that you had the work form 'x' time, hopefully well before the other party. I dont think its difinative proof tho... but has worked in the past.
Haha thats about the sum total of my knowledge gleened from a very long two years sleepin through music buisness studies lectures.

as above, any proof of your having written the work in question would serve to protect your rights over that work - assuming you're smart enough to back up your machine regularly then any original file could be verified to offer proof of date of composition etc.
anyway, more importantly i was referring to the idea that you can 'copyright' something by sending it to yourself - this is completely upside down, you own the rights to an original work until you choose to sign those rights over to someone else.
Any serious musician who has real and genuine concerns about being ripped off - by this I mean could actually be ripped off for serious amounts of money - would already have releases/publishing in place, at which point all this about sending CDs to yourself becomes completely irrelevant.
However, if there is legal precedent in the UK where a copyright infringement case has been won by someone posting an original work to themselves and keeping it unopened, please point me in the direction of some reference material cos I'm interested to read it and brush up on my copyright/IP law.

then BMG released it instead...typical business giant manhandling an indy label - unfortunately they didn't bank on UR being as tenacious as they are.
There's loads of info & copies of correspondence on that site:

that sony version is stunningly similar to the original. Does anyone know of people doing such blatant copies of other dance tracks or was this the only time?

Although not in the UK, it's worth noting that Elvis Presley used to do this and it saved him one day in court with one of his famous records 'Return to Sender'.
