TLDR for TLDR:

A game developer fucked some dudes to advance her career, and when people started asking questions, the gaming press refused to investigate, and instead attacked anyone calling for investigation. Now it's increasing clear that the gaming press is totally corrupt.

Here's the expanded TLDR for anyone that is still scratching their heads:

A short while back, the ex boyfriend of an indie game developer decided to air some of their dirty laundry publicly, this included details of 5 alleged affairs. Gamers started connecting the dots, and realized that the game developer in question had apparently had a sexual relationship with multiple people that were in a position to help her career.

When gamers began asking questions, the gaming press dismissed the very notion of there being anything improper, and immediately labeled anyone who even dared to ask questions as trolls. Gamers, often having more than a little of the 'tism in them (said with love, and credit goes to Internet Aristocrat), were undeterred, and started uncovering more evidence of corruption in the gaming press and indie games scene. The gaming press responded in a coordinated campaign of articles released almost exactly at the same time, declaring the "death of gamers" - meaning that anybody who still identified as a gamer was a white male basement dwelling misogynist.

A bunch of non male/white/cis/hetero/etc. gamers got really offended at being characterized as white male basement dwelling misogynists by people claiming to be defending "everyone else" so they started a whole new movement to examine the corruption in the video game press and beyond.

The two movements are #GamerGate (the original call for investigation) and #NotYourShield (the backlash of the non male/white/cis/hetero/etc.) gamers.

The gaming press ignores the legitimate calls for investigation, and instead focuses on trolling and shit flinging, claiming that everyone calling for investigation is just as bad as the trolls and shit flingers.

Breitbart drops a nuclear bomb on the issue, by releasing details of a secret mailing list that the members of the gaming press have, in fact, been using to collude on the issue the whole time.

On topic tho, this has been one of the stupidest controversies ever, and a good reminder of why I no longer really go on games forums.

ZQ didn't "sleep her way to the top". The original blogs made by her ex bf even specifically said that's not the case. She works among gaming people, including critics, and she cheated on her bf with them. The ones she slept with didnt even write reviews of her game.

All this shit has "uncovered" was that shes prolly not a very nice person and that shes terrible to be in a relationship with. Theres no fucking conspiracy or journalistic integrity scandal, that's just something spun into existence by a chinese whispers among game fan neckbeards who don't like ZQ.

For the record, I think ZQ probably doesn't really deserve the positions she gets. Her "game" is the same type of art-gamey deal you've seen in browsers forever, nothing revolutionary. The attention came from the legit misogynist harassment she was getting, which a lot of women in gaming get. In an effort to prove themselves as the most progressive, and not a part of the gamer neckbeard mob, publications, conventions, gaming companies etc have all been tripping over themselves to give ZQ the time of day even though she hasn't really contributed to games in a real way. Her case is a sad example of a pretty shit part of online gaming culture, she most certainly doesn't deserve the harassment, but she hasn't really done anything relevant.
