And I am partial to the UAD.

:)

Arguably the best plugin comp for vocals, ever. This thing is seriously magical and goes from transparent spookiness to thick as fuck.

This doesn't even need explaining.

:)

There's a ton of good stuff on there, but I pretty much stick with these two for most things and the SSL Duende for bread 'n' butter channelstrip stuff. I need to delve further when I have time.

Hey Unkle, what you reckon about the Powercore 01? Does it sound close to the SH-101? Does it sound good at all?

Anyway, the UAD-1 will certainly come first because of the price but some time later the Powercore will follow.

I've heard people recommend UAD for dynamics/eq and powercore for reverbs / fx.

had the powercore pci for a few years. mainly got it so I could run sony oxford eqs but these are now available natively. They are the nicest eqs I've heard.

Sony inflator is deep, used sparingly it can add lovely warmth to drums.

Character is really nice exiter, use it a lot on textures fx.

Got the access virus plug for it but after all that cash spent i still dont often reach for it. Still sounds very "plug in" and a bit weak to my ears compared to the hardware vers.

The bundled plug ins are fine, but maybe a bit dated by todays standards.
The reverbs are probably the best out of them. Mega Reverb is great for long natural hall type verbs, classicverb is cool for a 80's digital sound.

The tape sat in the eq is nice just to run drums through.

the 01 does an ok job, certainly one of the realistic sounding plugs when it came out but the filters still dont scream like the original.

I'm still on logic 5.5 so latency is a big problem when using the card, otherwise would throw more at it.

YES SIR! :D

One question tho, at which point do you need a 2nd card/what are the limits of a card?

Depends on the plug

the 33609 neve comp uses up 67% of one card ! its a beast

but the 88rs uses about 3% not bad sounding, different. the 33609 is really non linear so much harder to model i assume.

the re201 uses a lot, but varies depending on whether you have reverb, and 1 or 2 delays. up to around 50% of one card?

the rest vary by complexity.

but once you get one youll want 4....

:D

for myself, i've only been on a laptop the last few years so haven't been able to delve into the UAD stuff (the buy in for the firewire version, is, what, $1100??)

but from mixing in other studios-- the uad plugs are no joke. two oh one is right, the LA2A in the UAD sounds the closest to the hardware... at least to my ears. 1176, pultec, and fairchild, too. now if they weren't so damn power-hungry...

really excellent pack of mixtools.

haven't worked w/ the powercore but the sony plugs that finally got ported over to 'em were great in the protools world. aren't a bunch of them native au/vst now?

You can also get a Magma expansion chassis and load more UAD cards into that sucker if you're a power-hungry insano.

they emulated the sh-101's algorythms to make the plugin

same with the virus

The problem with the UAD is they haven't brought out a new card in years and they have given no signs of doing so soon. I think quite a few people are getting pissed off with this fact as the cards are becoming just expensive dongles (when you can only get one instance of a plugin on a card and you've got a quad core pentium sitting there). I would like them to either make a firewire device that was a lot more powerful or just port everything to native.

On the native side now as well you have the sony oxford, waves and the new URS channel strip, which I would say has surpassed the UAD.
