The Government is to create a new law which will outlaw inciting hatred against gay people - and homophobic rappers look set to be in the firing line.
Homophobic rappers face prosecutionJustice Secretary Jack Straw said: "It is a measure of how far we have come as a society in the last 10 years that we are now appalled by hatred and invective directed at people on the basis of their sexuality.
"It is time for the law to recognise this."
The law would cover gay men, lesbians and bisexual people, but could be extended to cover hatred against disabled and transgendered people.
Rappers and other musicians who incite violence against homosexuals in their lyrics face being prosecuted.
Ben Summerskill, chief executive of gay rights group Stonewall, said: "We're delighted. A new offence will help deter extremists who stir up hatred against lesbian and gay people.

I bet they'll have a get out clause for religious groups. Would be interesting to see if the BNP will run a gay candidate to play off the various anti-hate laws against each other, anti-gay muslim cleric against anti-muslim gay racist.
I think the silencing of any unpopular opinion isn't helpful because there is then no way of debating it. It just gives legitimacy to the idea that it must be "truth" because "they" don't want you to talk about it, which is pretty common in many racist groups.

All the while Section 28 remains at large. Perhaps relaxing that would lead to more understanding and (down the line) less hatred that makes it necessary to propose this law.

As do I.
When I first heard of big name Reggae artists being forced into signing the "Compassion Act" to be allowed to play a show,it really pissed me off.I just can't understand why or how battymen can get all in a huff about someone's spirtual beliefs.Granted, the lyrics are violent, and it is a known fact that battymen in yard will be beaten severely,or even killed(in rare cases). However, most of the stateside battymen are the one's causing the biggest blows to the Reggae community.Reggae clubs being shutdown because of complaints about Sizzla and Elephant Man tunes. My attitude is that if they don't like that message, they don't have to lisen. It may not necessarily be a "choice" to be a homosexual, but it is all about choice when it comes to listening to music.
Most people seem to think Reggae music is all about Bob Marley, one love, and smoking herbs.Reggae music is the musical equivalent of Southern Gospel music. And the true defenders of the Rasatfari faith have a very hard stance on the issue of homosexuality.Should society jail every Rastafarian for thier religious beliefs?I mean...it's already bad enough it is outlawed for them to indulge in thier holy sacrament of the Lamb's Bread, now the spiritual music can also be punishable by law?I sure don't hear anyone trying to ban or arrest Propaghandi,New Bomb Turks, and Pansy Division from saying what they have to say, even though some of it has
very anti-hetero messages behind it.
But even when rap/hiphop first came on the scene, gays tore it apart as being homophobic and "un-PC".Countless acts had to change thier lyrics, were sued, publicly reprimanded,and/or dropped from thier labels because of this.Gays aren't exactly accepted in the American black community either, for both religious and cultural reasons.Yet,walk through the Castro District of San Francisco(what most Rastafarians see as "America's Babylon"),and most of the clubs are spinning hiphop. Why is that?If it's so very anti-gay,then why play it?Because the DJ's know how to choose what doesn't offend them.
Again,it's all about choice.Just like I choose not to listen to Skrewdriver, because the concept of white supremecy/white power kind of offends me.But I wouldn't call for the arrest of the bands or fans of that music based on lyrics alone. Now if they burned a cross on my lawn or graffitti swastikas all over my front door, then there would be a serious problem.

Not liking gays isn't a spiritual belief.

I'm not sure the problem is that of gay people listening to it. It's a question of incitement and, given what I quoted first in the post, there's a good case for saying they could be linked.
Playing devils advocate because I lean towards what I put in bold although if someone painted a swastika on your front lawn because a song told them to then you can see why there's a problem.

bigup the thought police. i don't think anyone should ever be prosecuted for their beleifs, no matter how ridiculous they may be. expressing an opinion should not be a crime, dangerous path to take.

So racism shouldn't be punishable either by your logic?
It's not about thought or opinion - it's about direct incitement.
If 'boom bye bye' was about a racial group as opposed to sexuality that would be OK in your world?

i don't think should be prosecuted for things they say, however illogical or insensitive it might be. but people definitly need called out publicly when they're influencing/reinforcing negative and violent opinions about people. Basically, you can't just tell people to shut up or face fines, no matter what their ideas are. the KKK has to be able to say what they want, the conspiracy theorists, revolutionaries, and reggae artists. If anything its the companies that support these people that should be approached for empowering whatever message these guys are bringing, but sending people to jail over voicing their opinions is regression, not progession

no, i don't think it should. who decides what 'incitement' is? the whole debacle over nick griffin apparently 'inciting racial hatred' did nothing but attract more people to the BNP. the best way to deal with these issues is to have open debate about them.
now when it comes to actual physical violence, that's where the line needs to be drawn and people need to fight back. but freedom of speech should have no limits, imho.

Good post. This I agree with. At the end of the day, Shabba Ranks' career went into freefall not because of a law but because he was called out over it.
At the end of the day, homosexuality is illegal in Jamaica so you can see where the 'hatred' comes from.
EDIT: Must stop saying 'at the end of the day'

I bet the banning of bashing Religions will be on the agenda next, it really wouldn't surprise me at all if something likes this follows suite when this gay thing comes in to play.

cant have people running about doing in the gays thats just not on.
Call them what you fucking like in your tunes though.
When will it stop?? comedians being put in jail for making gay jokes too??
I genuinely dont think ive seen a stand up comedy that hasnt had at least one wee dig at our queerhawk brethren. Most things that make me laugh have some sort of victim involved, might sound a bit bad but most of you are probably the same. I have nothing against gay people, people of a different colour to me, old people, fat people, midgets etc, but i'm probably still going to find jokes about them very amusing. Doesn't mean i ever intend to listen to a song and think about harming any of them.
Who's making this law up anyway? There's people in the gay community that are just normal people who dont give a fuck about all this bollocks in peoples tunes and realise its just part of life. I'm just as likely to get a doing off a bunch of yardie rastas as a gay guy is.
When will the p-c generation realise what boring lives they lead.
