Acapella extraction techniques needed

I've searched the forum but can't find any threads relating to this, please point me in the right direction if there is another thread for this.

What is the best way to go about extracting an acapella from a track?

I understand the technique of playing the original with the instrumental and reversing the polarity of the instrumental to cancel out all frequencies except the vocal. But what if you don't have the instrumental?

Is there any software that can extract a vocal? Any other techniques to consider?

Cheers!

It's kind of like extracting salt from your dinner.

How about you remove the vocals first to create your own instrumental version?

I think I tried it once this way but I dont remember if it worked.

Short answer, there isn't one.

Only works if you have the instrumental, and I've yet to hear what I'd consider a 'good' acapella obtained using this technique.

Melodyne in theory should be able to isolate the vocal element of a tune and extract it that way

Good analogy lol, kinda puts it into perspective!

I've never really used Melodyne - I know it's pretty decent and versatile, but seems too complicated to me.

In that case, does anyone have an acapella for Ella Henderson - Glow? :D

These videos go through it pretty well.

Or like having a + b = c, and trying to guess "b" while only having "c".

I always ask myself the perfectly simple question what a lot of people seem to forget to ask themselves when making music.

Does the track really need it? I feel vocals are not used correctly in 90% of bass music, if you're just going to slap a 'pella over a beat, why don't you just re sing/rap it yourself?

Technology is getting scarily better, things like melodyne DNA etc are pushing things so far that hopefully soon we won't have this problem but for the time being these are never going to sound that great unless you have access to the original project files.

I tried extracting the vocals from Burial - Archangel and nothing really worked including Melodyne. Like Ledge said, the best approach is probably to sing it yourself and fix with Melodyne and in that case you might as well write your own line.

lol why didn't you just get the vocals from the original Ray J tune and process them the same way he did?

There are two choices -

spend a long time trying to extract with mainly poor results...

or, find the acapella.

If you can't find the acapella - you have to ask yourself, do you REALLY need it?
