So i'm on Reason 7. Propellerhead put 129$/€ price tag on version 8, which doesn't do much else than replace guitar and bass amps with different ones, and give some workflow/visual upgrades for people who don't know how to use keyboard shortcuts. Since i'm gonna skip this one and save some money, I'm planning to get some VSTs/AUs and host them with whatever works best.

Any suggestions what to get for that money? My first thought was to get Absynth because Reason lacks a real granular synth, but i'm all ears.

If u want a granular synth. Go for Alchemy, or a free thing Called HourGlass. Alchemy is a true beast and really versatile. Absynth is still cool, but it's got a really specific "Absynth" sound that unless you want to go for I'd avoid. If you're looking for a generic Granular thing, hour glass is a beast. It aint a vst, it's a standalone program but it's a workhorse for granular processing. And pretty much the best vst option for the same is Alchemy imo.

The fabfilter creative bundle is also awesome for the price. Top quality fx units.

I don't really know much about rack extensions on reason so I couldn't give you any advice there.

I love both Alchemy and Absynth...but I don't find Alchemy's granular capabilities are particularly powerful. That being said, it is my favorite soft synth. Modulation routing is very easy and it has tons of great sound shaping options. The internal FX are quite nice too.

Thanks guys, downloaded this hourglass-thingy, gonna get into it tomorrow. I had torrented versions of both Alchemy and Absynth on my old crappy hp laptop years ago, and i've been missing these after getting new laptop and moving to Reason. I was thinking about Absynth because it's only 69$ when alchemy is 200$+, but if i'm comfortable with any freeware equivalent I stick with that.

That fabfilter bundle looks cool, gonna at least download the trial version and see what's it like, I always wanted to try Saturn. I feel like a fat kid in a candy shop, so many choices.......

It's really weird and really cool at the same time. I think i'm gonna stick with this for a while.

Sounds good. It can be a bit mental. It's best to come at it with some kind of idea about what you want out of it. Getting your head around what kind of source samples are best to use for which thing e.t.c. is very handy to get a grip on too.

Edit: also go listen to some Amon Tobin (ISAM). The man is a god of granular mashuppery.
