Any ideas how he does it? I can do the old San Diego-type growl but this is really next level. So next level that I'm kinda afraid no one here will have any idea what to do haha. No harm in asking though.
My thought is that it could actually be massive, what with the double-notchy quality I hear. Or it could be FM, due to how smooth it is.
After looking at the Burial remix through a frequency spectrum there is definitely two peak filters and a notch being automated. Chorus could explain the smoothness as I've heard similar smoothness in Riddim sounds that use Chorus.

What is the San Diego-type growl?

You know, FM8 with lots of ohmicide, EQ mod and pitch-bends.
The second half of the drop with the crazy groals. I'm not saying I can perfectly create it but I have the concept down.

Ah ok. I forgot that track existed and I thought growls were starting to get regional names...you know...east coast growls are cooler than west coast growls...
I know what you mean about that smoothness. I have a hard on over the Immunity growl...it has that same kind of shimmery phaser smoothness to it where it isn't the usual toothy rough growl. My theory is that if it is a Massive patch, people are using the oscillator spectrum mode rather than the bend -/+. The bend mode seems to add that toothy character but when you swap a growl to spectrum mode, it is smooth.
I would guess that Skrillex is still rocking FM synths for growls...I am FM growl stupid though so I don't know what could be changing there.

Our very own Labco made a similar sound:
Not quite the same timbre but the smoothness is there.

Ok buddy, highly doubt you have anything close to that growl. Dont act like no one understands you and youre soooooo good. I fucking hate that shit.

What? Who said I have anything close to it? I'm asking for help as it is next level and I have no idea how to make it. It's not unreasonable to assume that since it makes no sense to me it might not make any sense to anyone else.

I don't see any hint of that attitude in his post. I took it as he understood the basics behind the growl style, not how to exactly reproduce the sound. FM synthesis has so many possibilities I don't think anyone can reproduce a sound exactly without the actual patch.

You know what? I'm sorry. I thought I said something like "I understand the basic concept for the San Diego type growls and am not concerned with them presently" but I actually said I can flat-out make them. I can see how my post could seem cocky or arrogant and I apologize.
However, I did accidentally make this a few days ago and It bares some resemblance to the SD growl I think. Soundcloud It's my favorite growl I've made yet.

Honestly "Draastex", you have had a bad attitude problem lately and its quite annoying trying to read something informational and see someone being a fucking cock to someone else for no reason. Not saying i have never done it before but dude you have turned into quite a jerk man.

I still don't have any idea what sound we are discussing since all these tracks have different sounds, but since I saw the "All is Fair" in the track list, here's my really old 10min attempt:

That sounds really cool! Any chance you could explain the process?

Well for a specific example, I would say 0:44 of Skrillex's and Trollphace's remix of Burial. Soundcloud

For one thing, I think that if we are trying to help each other out here than we need to stop ripping each other's heads off.
And if you think someone is being a jerk don't be a jerk back or you'll look like the bigger asshole. Besides omegamode did not say anything negative at all so I don't know why draastex is so pissed.
Let's be happy sound designers here
