sorry for the lame nondescript title couldn't think of anything else

but anyone got a lead on some sample pack with nice hits that aren't snares or claps or toms but would work as such? you know like thumps and snareish sounds that you can find in basically a lot of tracks from the past few years

just posting this as an example cause it made me think about the whole thing. I mean there's some classic drum machine work but those percs...

i have a similar question from a different angle that i hope you dont mind me lumping in here as well

if i have got access to an old drum machine whats the best way to go about making a sample pack from it

just a case of running it through into my daw directly and hitting each pad in turn whilst recording

should i be adding any compressors or limiters or exciters or aynthing to the record in channel

Spectrasonics has some good stuff from real percussive instruments and layered one shots to synth hits, but assuming you won't torrent it, the price tag is really depressing (299$ for complete library, around 100$ for individual packs.

You are not the only one lol. I've seen this a lot on the other forums in threads about good electric guitar samples, there's always someone saying "record your own samples". Sure anyone who doesn't happen to have quality guitar and amp can grab one out of their ass, no problem[/quote]

Can't say for sure but I wouldn't add anything except maybe limiter preventing clipping if something goes to the red. Normalizing your samples when rendering to audio might be a good idea, so there will be no wtf-moments when browsing through samples and some snare is so quiet that you can't hear it, when the next one is so loud you get a heart attack. Any real processing you stick there will stay there, so I think it's better to have one "raw" version of every sample.

Answer to your OP: Percussionism is a great pack with all kinds of drum hits from all sorts of ethnic drums. I'm guessing since you aren't a sound designer you have no interest in making your own drums, but, in case it is useful to someone else Dirt and Layers by Gold Baby is a gold mine for making things that sound kinda like standard drums, but not so standard.

As for recording the drum machine--when I record any of my outboard gear I think it sounds better recorded through preamps, more so synths than drum machines though. I wouldn't bother with an processing while recording. Theoretically if the drum machine is working properly there should be any volume surprises at all, but a protective limiter is never a terrible idea, really. Get the gain staging right though if the drum machine is noisy.

Try bedroomproducersblog site. Type percussion in the search box. There seems to be quiet a few pages with perc samples.

I'd either a) record them dry or b) have two versions, dry and processed with eq, saturation and compression/limiting. If you have only the processed versions, you're taking the Vengeance route.

Just record them dry Soronery. You can always pass them through whatever effects, pedals or compression at a later date. Just get highest quality, highest bit rate, loudest and cleanest you can with your sound card.

If you happen to have neve compressors lying around though, I'm sure you could put them to use!
