Other genres just seem to lack dynamism-if you get me. DnB is around a recognised bpm/with no real scope for drum experimentation (imo)-house is 4x4 with a definitive bass sound-dubstep-just seems to have that extra room for experimentation. Thoughts?

IMO that is a narrow view of both House and DnB. Yes, "commercial" DnB is pretty rigid as to BPM and drums programming...but if you look wider you'll find DnB from 150-180BPM with all kinds of broken beats and weird stuff going on. Even within commercial stuff there are a lot of flavors of DnB even if the BPM range and drum programming is fairly standard. And yea, House is four to floor, but again if you look around there are all kinds tunes with great additional percussion programming...synth based harmony, sample based harmony, mixing the two.

I really don't see Dubstep as having more or less room for experimentation if you want your stuff played out. Even the deep/dungeon stuff is pretty formulaic IMO. Actually pretty boring these days. Except for the top 1% of producers in any of the easily defined dance genres, everyone is pretty much a one trick pony. Yea they are putting out records, but they are mostly writing the same song over and over again...

I don't even know what to call it, but pretty much everything from AtomNation (label) is what I'm into these days...good variety of sounds, danceable/mixable, the artists don't seem pinned down in such a way as to sound generic.

I remember someone on here telling me years ago, that it it wasn't dubstep if it wasn't halfstep at 140 bpm with the kick on the one and the snare on the three.

That people don't call what the majority of what I do Dubstep anymore.

For me its the feeling of when a rough idea becomes a tune, and beyond that when the tune hypes other people out. I rarely ever make 'dancefloor' material, but the first time i headlined I played my set, and the dj incoming next asked me to play one more while he got ready so i just hit play on an original beat. The packed dancefloor erupted on the drop of my tune and I was just sat there behind the decks stupefied but utterly happy.

At the end of the day I just love the idea of starting from just a simple beat or riff into something that can hype people out, even if its just me being hyped on my own stuff.

I always figured that the genre was just for DJs to be able to label their sets,
as far as music goes you don't really know what you've got until its finished.

I almost wish there was no internet or computers and I just had my hardware, mixer and DAT. Because I honestly really love just making beats with weird noise on top and jamming on things for like an hour while drinking beers. I'm pretty much never giving that up. Fuck the rest. Have some friends come over on Sundays, plug into a system in the garage and just make some fun loving chaos. The whole idea of scenes, genres, promotion, labels ugh...

I like the attention to detail; it's a really simple style of music, but that means you have to put a lot of effort in to make it sound good...

So, do you still think that? You were telling me the drums had to be a certain way, yet you are now saying that dubstep has a lot of room for experimentation. Granted, it was a few years ago.
