Automated Saturation

Has anyone tried this? I did. And I think you should give it a go.

Usually when i hear of automation I think sidechaining or eq automation, but has anyone else tried automating the amount of saturation going on in a mix? I'm talking about for more transient things like drums and stabs or plucks. I think that drums and other transient sounds can really benefit from an automated tape saturation on the master.

I know many people would probably go, "Why not just saturate the drums in their separate channel?" I think that if you do that, a lot of the harmonic content gained can be lost in even the best mixed tracks. I think though that a saturation automated on the master gives a natural harmonic boost that would apply to everything, giving a more profound punch, however would most notably be heard on the drums or other sounds that hit.

I realized this would be insanely tough for most other sounds but its really easy to be pulled off for a kick or a snare. I just used fl kick with the peak filter and routed it to Fabfilter Saturns saturation amount the same way I would a sidechain. But I messed with the kick's adsr so that the envelope looked like a triangle. That way the distortion ramps up after that initial transient and distort the beef of the drums. the results were interesting.

So has anyone tried something like this before?

Hollow fart snare. Alternatively know as reverse ass queef snare.

Whatever, though, keep experimenting. See you're really using FL :4:

I try to get as much grit out of fart sounds as possible, never liked clean sounding ones anyway.

Best fart should have a long tail, or 'follow through' as it's known.

It's a good idea definitely

automating wave shapers and then cutting out the best bits is saturation heaven btw
if you then put those through a nice verb it can yield some unique slippery wet results

Dammit

Ok so you have a piece of wood (maybe its a percussive hit in the making)
and you throw it at the wall.

Then you would probably be disappointed when it just hits the wall and does a half hearted creak or slightly woody boink and that was it!!!!!!

BUT WITH MY *METHOD* :dunce: :dunce: :dunce:
It now sounds
like if you threw a fat gecko at a wall and it stayed there like a poster instead.
