Search for the acapella instead, its much easier!

And no, for sample editing I'd recommend Sound Forge, Cool Edit or Wavelab.

cubase PWNS all those programs (except wavelab)


you can do anything (other than seperate vocals from an instrumental) in cubase.

I heard about a technique where you use phase cancellation to seperate out vocals, but it was explained to me in theory, and not shown to me.

I dunno I just find cubase irritating for chopping audio up, perhaps cos I've been using sound forge for so long..


The other technique you refer to goes something along the lines of....

you get your track, instrumental and vocals combined, then you get just the instrumental. Invert the phase of one, and mix them together..

the instrumental parts will be out of phase with each other and cancel out, and you should be left with just the vocals.

this was using the same principal as that shitty alesis vocal remover that came out in 2005

all you need is the song seperated into a right and a left track and using panning to create the cancellation

Most tracks are mixed so the vocals are in the middle of the stereo field, so if you invert the phase of the left channel and add it to the right the vocals will cancel out and you are left with just the instrumental.. then ermm invert the phase of that and add it back to the original the instrumental will cancel out., possibly.. ahh fuck it..

the problem with all this is that vocals often (allways) have reverb on em so your never gonna be left with just a pure vocal track.. generally a pile of mush..
