Ez

I did this compilation for a mate and thought I would share it with you guys if you are interested.

The idea was to put together tunes I really love regardless of genre.

I have tried to put them together so that a certain thread / theme continues from track to track, but tried to keep things diverse (however, there are quite a few dubstep tracks on there, but that’s because my mate has never listened to dubstep and I wanted to expose her to it. If I had been making this specifically for the forum, I wouldn’t have put these tracks on there as they are really well known).

I have used Ableton in order to mix the tracks where appropriate. Some are ‘blended’ and some are just fade up fade down jobs – depends on how the tracks fit. I’ve used some Ableton effects where necessary.

A lot of you will know most of the tracks, but there may be a couple you haven’t heard.

It’s not very hi tech, but it was fun to make. I hope you enjoy it.

If you are up for it, please do one yourself and post it in this thread. I bet everyone has diverse tastes and it would be a good way to hear new stuff. The only rule I guess would be not to let any single genre totally dominate the mix/compilation.

Cheers.

Yeah - I guess there would be issues about not mixing.

All the tracks on mine overlap to some extent - some are full mixes, some kind of meld in without fully mixing.

I'm sure one of the mods will comment if it is a problem.

Seriously, if you can get a copy of Ableton it is a piece of piss to put together a mix of sorts.

Do one, it would be good to hear different music.

Just record basic fades between tracks and/or make it available in lower quality. Technically, under copyright law, music and other copyrighted materials can be distributed freely if it is for use in critical discourse.

Right ive got this bloody ableton thing but im fucked if i know how to use it. Me and technology don't mesh. Is there an easy way i can fade one track into another, a simple programme which will do it for me?

There will be a button down the right hand side which will allow you to view the crossfader, put one tune in one audio track, select the A button, the other in a second with the B button pressed, and crossfade away.

Although if it's just the demo you have you won't be able to export audio, which will scupper your plan.

iTunes will do it for you automatically if you have that.

If you do just create a playlist and order your tracks. You need to make sure 'crossfade playback' is selected through the preferences>playback menus. You can also select how long the crossfade duration will be there.

Once you have it all ready just hit play and record the output.

I think i'll do it through i-tunes that ableton programme is long and all the info on screen gives me a headache. I have no patience. Cheers i'll start compiling.

I loved this, like listening to Late Junction on Radio 3 only with added drama and beats! Styles from everywhere and full of surprises while staying a coherent whole.
I've got an eclectic mix I did as a sort of tribute to Steve Reich after seeing him with Coldcut And DJ Spooky at the Barbican. I just wanted to establish a mood and maintain it.

Nice one for signing up to leave the comment ghandi - really glad you enjoyed it.

That Reich inspired mix sounds interesting, I'll check it out. Got the link?

Oh, welcome to the forum by the way. :D

The link they gave me doesn't seem to work, but if you go to gotdarker.com,
you can click on 'search' to find 'ghandi-reich and roll'.
So it's 3 clicks away instead of 1.
I might have to change that title though,it sounds like a Skrewdriver song.

Checked it out - like it, especially the Reich bits. Those Trentemoller bits are wicked too. Cheers.

For anyone else interested in ghandi's mix, this is the link:
