God damn we need some more big artists up this dreary side of England! I 've been dying to see Shackleton for far too long and unless I pay 50/60quid to catch a train to Bristol or London it just aint happenin so Im beggin too get your sexy percussive ass down here haha!

Seems to be the case in the North West, don't get me wrong we have had some big artists spread between Manchester and Liverpool (Mark One, Loefah, Skream, Kode 9 in January thanks to Thomas E. Griffin (What a guy!)) but where are Mala, Peverelist, 2562, Pinch to name but a few.

And where the hell is our sound system culture, that is definitely something we need to get sorted more than anything else, can't wait to go to a club up here and actually have a sound system whats crisp and punchy at both the high and low end! We should get a project going to build an absolute killa of a system!

I know this seems like a moaning post but I just wanna show to all the big artists that the North West really is ready and waiting for you all to come up here and tear it up with some seriously heavy bass!

With doing the soundsystem ting, do you reckon its best if you build it from scratch or buy professional gear? Have to admit an clueless on that side of things haha!

if you don't know what you're doing and can't link with someone that does, you'll struggle to build a sound from scratch, it's not that simple.

that said, buying high quality gear is not cheap, so maybe you should try the DIY route. There's a lot of help & speaker designs on the net, but you'll need a bit of skill with tools and a soldering iron if you want to build anything half-decent.



btw I know you don't want to travel, but Subloaded here in Bristol on 1st Feb is a good look: Hatcha, Shackleton, Plastician, Appleblim, Peverelist, Joker, Komonasmuk.....prob wouldn't be that expensive on the coach.

See now that does sound like an excellent night! The problem I have is not getting down there is dealing with getting back off my box at 5am, thats the bit which will kill me (softly haha)!

I suppose if you buy professional stuff though, you get your warranty and you know its gonna be good if you've looked into it all properly. Suppose thats the price you pay for good gear.

It's quite difficult to get people like shackleton and pinch and appleblim up here.
Because the scene isn't as far advanced as in London Bristol and Leeds. It consists of, as well as the few that are deeply immersed in the scene, a lot people who have a kind of passing interest and won't have heard of artists other than the big 3 or 4 (skream, mystikz, benga and kode (possibly?!?!)). The cost of getting the more 'specialist' guys up here (travel and accomodation) is the same as with the likes of skream etc. The fees are slightly smaller, but they are, through no fault of their own, gonna pull in a smaller crowd and be able to charge a smaller door price. This is a shame, but also a practical reality. I can't afford to run my night at a loss, because it means I won't be able to afford the next one, which has to be priority number one. It's a fine line you have to walk between artistic integrity and commerce but in the developing scenes of the northern provinces it's one worth taking into consideration.

Saying that. Jasbof did shackleton and appleblim in Liverpool a good few years ago, but I don't think they'll have charged the fees they do (and deserve) now.

No the soundsystem bit was just another lil rant of mine. That'd just be more for me the soundsystem, something to sleep on (itd serve as a damn good alarm clock!)

Ok so: Plan 1: Steal Shackleton, then use him as bait to lure other people in to the dreaded North West haha!

So what do you do Griffin for a soundsystem? Just use whats provided at the venue or do you have a few secret weapons?

Just gotta be careful about where you put people on. In Liverpool, the Zanzibar system is good and the magnet (when it's plumped up by gobba's extra subs) sounds alright. The Barfly theatre is pretty crushing to be honest. It's not like Iration and that. but it's where Chibuku put all the biggest Drum and bass deejays so it's pretty tight once there are some people in there.

Obviously it'd be ideal to get a big reggae soundsystem in. but again, it's cost. I'd love to get operation or mungo's or another of the big sounds in but it's gonna stick another 5 or 6 hundred quid on your outgoings and jsut by having a better sound, you're not going to get an extra 100 or 150 people to justify the outlay.

But, as Kevin Costner says, 'build it, and they will come'. Draw for the soldering iron and the skillsaw and become a soundman

I went to magnet and the sound wasn't to good to be honest. The subs weren't there but the clarity wasn't amazing on the mid and top either, boo! Do you play in the upstairs room of the Barfly then? Cheers for the info matey, tis really appreciated!

High Pressure is a quality sound. Heard it at Basscamp in Manc.

I missed the High Pressure Sound System in Manchester, was gutted Right screw it im in! Would you reccomend getting tickets beforehand? Would I be alright finding a way up with ye Griffin if I could get any of my holmies going haha? Peace!
