What course(s) did you do?

learnt more in my room. (stright up)

I don't think it guarantees anything. Getting real world placement and experience is the important bit.

I'd ask all the guys working full time in Guitar center if their musical education was worth it.

i studied music production , gonna finish my last year for a degree next year.

you'll learn stuff, but not necessarily for dubstep.

if you straight up just wanna produce dubstep, don't bother. if your interested in music generally, do it. better then working .

but for dubstep i've learnt way more at home

1-2 things Ill have to say. Basically, 98% musicians, and the guys buying studio inventory are , well let's say, dumbasses. IF you want 'em to treat You too, like a dumbass, go to music prod college. If you want understand things go to place like music-dsp, diyaudio etc

If you're thinking about it, look at reputation and placement programs.

201 is right to a certain extent, that just going to some recording school, or your local CC music dept might not yield much as far as career advancement, but you will learn a fuckload, if you want to learn it.

Placement is ideal, though i went to (arguably) one of the better schools for that, and it wasn't the school that got me the job. it was what they taught me about being an adult, professional musician, that prepared me to interview at the top audio companies.

If you are interested in music school, then it will benefit you. There's a lot of shit that comes with it, egos, politics, bankruptcy, but its worth it. I had 3 kidney stones while in college!

one word on BT, hes a music school dropout...

We all agree his music sucks, but his production technique is stellar...

So really hes just got a poor creative instinct, his technique is quite good...

is it? how can u tell? I read that sentence 4 times and still couldnt make any fuckin sense of it

anyway, back on topic...i'm sure u dont learn anything much in music school that u cant learn on yr own...but u'll learn it all a lot quicker in school i guess...assumin u keep the bedroom side of things going at the same time and dont just end up a technical genius that does nothing with the knowledge.

i met plenty geeky musos types over the years that know everything, got a million synths and racks, talk about music analysing it endlessly ("yeah right, my mate dave says that, like, if the brass section off of that congos LP got together with like Yabby U and sly and robbie on rhythm section then it'd be like one of the best LPs ever")...but produce absolutely FUCK ALL

i mgunna do music tech after i finish the course im doin

the people i av spoken to says that it makes you look at music production in diffrent way and fink about it diffrent...rather than help ur accually technique and that is more up to you to sort that.

thats just a opinon from a like 2 people thou.

Indeed. I've spoken with him several times. He's amazingly positive (infectiously, in fact) and knows how to sell himself and get himself out there. I'd say he was more of a business man who found his niche.

About 0.1 % ppl understand digital to a degree I would call OK . You sohuld have sense for trigonometry. Until you suck at trigonometry you'll suck in audio for EVER , this is digital age. You'd better use google and start to find great places with pile of PDF-s of AES meetings. These cost money normally, but if you re smart you can find your way around it. If you understand the purpose of AES papers to degree of 70-80% then you are on track .

Education can't hurt (except financially).

anyway i wont argue anymore. Go to music prod school, presto LOL. You should know , the institute of "school" goin to be endangered species in 2050. No problem just do it, and when the boutiqe manufacturer puts the shit thru your throat be happy to assist.

Personally, I would prefer it later! 4 years experience selling shoes is about as good as 4 years in a college as far as employers are concerned, but at least you'd spend the 4 years having a fucking blast, and thats 4 years of being in the right place...

Better to set yourself up to win, rather than fail.

read books on music... lot's of them.

go to clubs, go to gigs, spend every moment of your spare time either in the studio or en route to one of your live shows.

Eat music, sleep music and drink coca cola.

I've worked with people who know more about music tech through experimentation at home, reading and being involved in the local scene than through going to college.

College doesn't make good doctors, good doctors care about being good doctors. they would be good doctors even if they didn't have a certificate saying they understood the technical medical stuff......!

Go to college if you want to be forced to do music related projects and get a certificate at the end.

Do your own thing and be persistent if you want to grow at your own pace in your own directiong for your own enjoyment..!
