-40hz roll off?

Heya...

Just finished reading an interview with Noisia. 8) (CM 104, Sept issue)

They say they use spectral analysis to ensure everything below 40hz is filtered out..

Does anybody else do this?

Surely on a proper rig with dedicated subs, it would be preferencial to dubsteppers and bassheads if there was still such deep bass? Is it dangerous to our bodies?

Also, would such deep frequencies adversely affect the vinyl cutting process?

????Should I be rolling off the low end on all my tracks!! :o

Any enlightenment appreciated! :)

Thanks

you should take in count where your tune will be listened to. people who listen tunes on radio or at home hifi system will not benefit much from that low freq. and because lower freq takes more headroom basically you would want to roll of below 40Hz. i personally roll of bellow 50Hz.

my monitors are flat to 30hz, only -3 at 27hz so I do what I wanna do OK?

ps: Never do that with Linear phase EQ or you'll suck .

theres that theory which says that having basslines centered around 50hz is best.... you can go lower, but 50hz gives the best weight without sucking up loads of headroom as far as i understand it.

but id be wary of just chopping off the 50hz area. very wary. i'm pretty sure that'd rip out most of teh bass weight from my tunes if i tried it! :)

i guess the key is to use your ears. if you have good monitors/headphones then trust them. if it sounds better, it is. if it sounds worse, it is.

I don't think it matters too much because if it's pressed to vinyl the mastering engineer will do that anyway. I think a lot of high end is rolled off and also the low end below 30hz to prevent the needle from skipping or something. :?

yip thats true. And thats nowhere linear phase either (-> artifacts)

sealed subwoofer can get you there too , just harder to integrate cause the crossover it requires, + hundreds of Wattage , JBL's eat on order of milliwatts for same SPL

I put a cut on the master at 30 Hz. You can always switch if off when you get it mastered (if you do). It definitely makes everything sound much more polished and tight.

I rolloff EVERYTHING at 40hz except my bass

standard

what prog you ppl use for this...
you know extreme attenuation brings more& more extreme artifacts into the game ... especially if its linear phase.

if its not linear phase, you get phase shift

Always do it.

Don't forget, you're ROLLING off the frequencies, not cutting them off all together. Just a couple of dB of bass down there is enough to get some girth without removing all your headroom.

Also analyse and cut off the lows on everything, even if it doesn't appear to have messy lows -You'd be surprised how much bass there is in some high hats.

we could argue how useful is the roll off category 12db/oct below 100hz....

someone knows topology of the Neumann cutting desk ?

why argue?

everyone has their own methods around here

to clarify this, 6db/oct stuff is roll off in my book , 24db/oct starts to get steep.

I would suggest enrolling on a sound engineering course to give you a good foundation in sound.
To answer the question;
All of your tracks are going to be different so don't restrict yourself to a certain technique, try different things and listen to the results.
