Hey Seckle.

Hows the whole dubstep/brokenbeats/downtempo ting doing in NYC?

Is it going over ppl's heads or the exact opposite?

well, it's just starting to bubble this year. the first dubstep party we had here was late 2004. grime had it's moments this summer. lady sovereign just got signed to a production deal with def jam USA/jay z, which means good things for her and that genre. M.I.A. had sold out shows here this summer. it's slowly starting to take hold, but the biggest problem we face in new york, is hip hop. this town is still rnb and hip hop dominated. on a normal friday night, you might have 500 dj's spinning hip hop events and maybe 10 spinning grime/dubstep/dnb..etc.

Lady Sovereign signed to Def Jam???????

I heard some of her stuff on the radio & to say it wasn't my cup of tea is an understatement.

Same goes for some of the MIA stuff although she is way better than Sovereign.

As for hiphops dominance,it's a juggernaut that's just unstoppable & is getting bigger & bigger & bigger.

& imagine 25yrs ago when hiphop was just catching on everybody said it was a fad that wouldn't last.

How wrong they were.

the thing is though, the bigger it get's, the more money it brings in for venues/bars/nightclubs. this in turn locks out smaller genre music from getting exposed. you've no idea all the leaps and hurdles you've got to go through to convince a venue owner to give your dubstep/dnb party a shot on a thurs, fri or saturday night. most don't want to risk a poor draw, so they'll try and push a tuesday night on you. ughh. enough of monday/tuesday bookings. reading all the events going in the uk/ireland, throwing a dubstep party on a friday night, doesn't seem to be hard for you people.

Over here it's far easier to put on different nights from the mainstream norm.

1.The clubbing population are very open minded & are always on the lookout for new clubs, venues, music styles,dj's etc...

2.House music & Techno are the biggest forms of club music with hiphop not far behind & so there's no one big style that strangles all the others.

3.We have a heavy drinking population so on a quiet club night a crowd of maybe 2-300 could consume a ton of drink & make the club owner/promoter a huge profit from that alone so he doesn't always shy away from nights like this.

4.We have a great radio network that plays new music & supports new styles & artists.Hence dubstep getting major airplay on bbc radio1 already! Which acts as great advertising for all involved.

5. I'll stop at 4
