this reminds of that study (probably an urban legend though) where they made a robot take 7 steps and on the 7th one they would knock it over, they kept doing it until apparantly the robot learnt not to take that 7th step cos it knew it would get knocked over

Well that's either complete lies or pretty trivial, depending on how you wanted to implement it. If you simply told the robot to take 7 steps, it'll do that forever, it wouldn't even know that it had been knocked over, let alone try to avoid it.
If you put in a bunch of sensors to monitor whether it's vertical and then wrote an adaptive goal-based control mechanism with staying upright having a higher priority than taking 7 steps, it would 'learn' not to take 7 steps pretty fast. It would be a fairly contrived and pointless situation though.

The Starfish thing on the other hand is really very cool indeed. It's not self aware in a consciousness sense, but it has personal spatial awareness, and is able to adjust it based on new data, like when it was damaged.
Interestingly, that's what babies are doing when they flail around, suck their feet, poke themselves in the head etc. They're not being retarded, they're working out exactly how the different parts of their body interact, so they can predict what will happen when they move limbs etc. That's what it's doing at the beginning of the video. I did some stuff on it last year, just the basic theory though, no way I could build one. Could well end up doing something similar as my dissertation next year though. My degree is awesome.

Oh wow just reading the website about it, it's actually even more cunning than I thought. It doesn't just adapt to damage or whatever, it actually has no idea it's even a 'starfish'. It just has 8 motors and sensors, and it evolves a model based on the results it gets from basically flailing about. So it can work out how to move regardless of how you put it together.

Yeah, he skipped straight to number 8.

Seriously though, if you're interested in that sort of shit you should read 'Emergence', by Stephen Johnson. It's got some pretty interesting examples of emergent systems (like intelligence f'rinstance) in nature and society. A damn good read.

(wiggedy wiggedy brockwile etc.)
