I dont think its baffling at all man, that tune pushing his buttons makes perfect sense, to me much more so than request line. Lush, engulfing melodies, minimal, trippy drums, unorthodox structure. Villalobos is a complete don, for me he's one of the most exciting producers in electronic music

having said that though, i think perhaps blood on my hands does have a strangely diverse appeal as well... a drumfunk producer called macc who mostly listens to (from what i can pick up) leftfield drum and bass and free jazz / fusion, and is almost obstinately disinterested in dubstep absolutely loves that track. It has a real majesty to it that track, a beautiful, emotive feeling, dark yet soothing

On a slightly different note, what is the general feeling here on minimal techno/house/crack house/whatever you want to call it... villalobos, luciano, mathew dear, perlon, poker flat etc... i fucking love it, and would expect a lot of dubstep heads to do so also, but it seems from comments ive seen round and about that this is perhaps not the case...

personally i quite like some of it but have tried raving to it and failed - probably becuase of the shitty systems but mainly becuase the music is the ultimate tease - it just never drops!!!!! to be listened to while sitting down, imo

its true about the teasing, its a different kind of raving to what we've gotten used to as a result of what ive heard referred to as the ardcore continuum...its like tantric raving, outrageously long sustained periods of pressure, then eventual release but not in the (silence, vocal sample booom) kind of way, in a gradually increading climax that you hardly perceive, but then before you know it you're losing yourself tribal style without having heard a discernable drop. But this is the thing, i find a certain degree to which some dubstep is similar, in particular when ive seen mala dj, and the way he structures a lot of his tracks, aside from the more obvious 'aesthetic' similarities (cavernous atmospheres, economical use of percussion/arrangement)

What you say about the system is probs true as well, many producers use a fucking lot of sub, we put on a night in bristol and got in some extra k's of rig for the ocassion, and the minimal sounded absolutely monstrous...big tearing sounds, really tranforms from the bedroom

But i can definately see why it isnt for everyone in the club, it is just a matter of different strokes for different folks, but i for one cant wait to get myself to berlin and see whats goin on, it sounds so sick over there...

Heard some old Basic Channel stuff and I think if minimal's done well and mixed well it sounds good. Think the drop/sample business is good but does feel like the musical equivalent of an Oliver Stone movie, this is where you're supposed to feel this, this is where you feel that, etc. Think minimals more hypnotic when it's done well and doesn't really need all the bombastics.

i have found pinch's "qawwali" to work incredibly well with minimal techno beats as well...

i did a hard techno set last night and worked in loefah's "goat stare", luke envoy's "honour kill" and kode 9 "9 samurai".

had a lot of fun doing it. it was kind of an experiment, but it went off a treat!

will have the recording soon if anyone is interested...

Plastique by Plastickman on top would be amazing, think that'd go really well in a dubstep set, might not quite match tempo wise but think that'd bridge the gap nicely

that minimal techno vs dubstep thing really works

Like many threads on this forum, it's good that it makes me dig back through the crates and dig out loads of tunes that I might not have thought of otherwise. Glad I got those old Plastikman 12"'s. Glad to have such open-minded people here.

Seeing as you guys are disscusing minimal tech/house crackbag. Have you checked minimze to maximise on minus. It came out last year and has been on rotation ever since, some very good tracks on there.
