it's programming like this on viacom that just perpetuates and also validates the "dumb american" stereotype. shameful, and i'm glad the bbc take shots like this. this country needs to wake up and smell what we're broadcasting.

He does have an amazing way with words it has to be said. His piece on aspirational tv is one of the best things I've seen in a long while

Yeah is a great shame, but seems inevitable. The amount of twats that are going to go bankrupt by not realising that they can't afford £30k loans on a £15k job is ridiculous. I kind of think the inevitable recession might be a good thing in some ways, might actually make people realise what's important in life - and no, it's not trainers.

Yeah true, but I only really meet the ones that come to the UK. To be honest most of the dimmer, quasi-illiterate posters on here are all english, which doesn't say much about perceived intellectual superiority.

To get back to the Charlie Brooker theme here's his little piece about getting your ideas on the tv - does seem to be rather too close to the truth judging by the shit that does get made.

I don't actually want to leave the UK, I just wish it wasn't run by stnuc, who seem to get voted in because of the "doesn't matter who you vote for, the government always gets in" arsehats not voting, and the people that keep consuming shit which means that other stnuc get richer and then keep the endless tnuc cycle perpetuated.
So basically if you kicked out the capitalist shitbags, the consumerist twats and the apathetic fucktards it could be quite a good place for the half a million or so left.

Saw that one a few minutes back. He does point out the hypocrisy very well.

what i find irritating to no end about the gross hypocrisy of our media conglomerates here in the US is that they export this sense of hysteria to the rest of planet via these lowest common denominator plots and show concepts. everything is extreme on our tv here. we're bombarded with sensationalisms everywhere we turn. the more outrageous and sensational, the more viewers. britney spear's falling to pieces....great...let's put it on prime time at 8pm, instead of talking about the deficit or the fact that china owns 3/4 of our national debt. anything but the cold hard reality.
don't discuss the real issues, but watch MTV and join the cycle of helplessness. we're bankrupt financially and we bomb people in the name of democracy. there are days where it makes me ill.

i wouldn't say that's unique to england though. apathy is a generational problem that's all over the western world. we are the generation that never went through a world war, or famine, or holocaust. we've never had to ration our food, or run to a bomb shelter, so when horrible things happen in the world it's not a reality in our lives. someone else's problems. not mine, etc.
