Or possibly its an organ but I'm unsure hence asking, anyway how do I get the sound?

a)get a mic and a guitar... and record the upstroke chords....
b)get a hammond plugin.... record some chords
c)get a old dub vinyl record and sample some upstroke chords/organ chords

Hammond organ. The organ used in all the old reggae/ska tracks. Native Instruments B4 is generally regarded as the best software simulation of it.
R's advice is sound. Personally, I'd go with the guitar option.

Haha. In British slang, "sound" can also mean "good".

download some dub packs for quick access to old sampled records.
less original option, but more immediately satisfying.

even if you already done it, check out Rumpelraush Taips plugins. They're free, as long as you donate something to a NGO, and you can't live without them once you tried them. Spotlight plugin is "Crazy Diamonds", named after the first preset of this gorgeous machine...

But also ZR-3 is wonderful. Nah miss it!

There are also plenty of Reggae and Dub MIDI files on the net, with all the chord structures you need! I would suggest creating your sounds from scratch and avoid samples, you learn a lot more about sound and production that way!

you might find you get a better sound instead of playing the chords normally, turn the volume on the amp right up and mute the guitar(by just pressing lightly on the left hand)
also, although there's plenty reggae with organ on it, there's also just as much where there's no organ, but a guitar and piano playing at the same time; though i've only ever got a sound i like using a real piano, and i know that's a bit of hassle if you aint got one

Ray Hitchins wrote a book on how to play reggae guitar.
This includes tuition on how to play the syncopated reggae rhythm guitar, or "skank" as you call it, however, I believe the term many reggae artists use is "the bang".
electric guitar is the best instrument to achieve a stereo typical bang.
I would listen to old school reggae to get an idea of how it should sound.
Hope that helps.
