i never use presets in synths

but on fx's then ocationally

I have no problem at all about using presets.

i always start with presets

when i have an idea i will quickly find a preset that will do the job
then i will go back and tweak the preset/layer in more synths/add fx etc. etc.

i never end up with a preset... but always start with them

oh and i will also reuse parts of my own tracks if i feel like i have some ideas for it but it wont fit the current project

i copy and paste a particular channel into a new project then will tweak it to the new i dea i have in my head then build a track around it

it never sounds like the original channel that i copied and pasted... but that will be its origin

me too. thats one thing i love about finishing a tune - being able to cannibalize it and come back for more!

I have no issue with using presets. I rarely do because playing about with synths is most of the fun of writing tunes for me. That's what they're for, innit? But it does happen. Especially on pads, and the more subtle aspects of a tune.

I used to love folk on dnb forums who would go "naaah, using presets makes you a bad producer" in one thread and then go "hey does anyone know what break Optical used in..." in another. Same shit, innit.

If I can't find close to what I want in a preset, I will then synthesise something from scratch if I have the time.

But, I have absolutely no qualms about presets, because it saves time that is better spent on composition. I usually always tweak them just to make them fit in, but if it magically works and sounds good, who cares?

I don't like Arps in presets, though, because I feel that they're a sequence that wasn't written by me. Even though they're not. But they are.

I used to be obsessed and make absolutely everything from scratch, including synthesising drums, for geeking value. Soon, you realise that nobody fucking cares and the only people who can spot a preset are your peers. And peers can fuck off. Mostly nobody notices and if they do, they're concentrating on the wrong things about music, IMHO.

The only place I draw the line is that I don't like using samples or loops from other people. That feels like cheating, even after tweaking. I still feel sick listening to Choke, because I put a 'Jah' sample in it from somewhere or other.

And embarrassed I should be.



Moby used plenty of presets, and like him or not, he could knock out a memorable tune. So can Numan, another preset user. Maybe they're concentrating on the bigger picture, eh?

agreed 201, i'll never use someone else's samples or loops - they're not mine. i didnt make them. I feel the same way about arps too. they're fun, but just fun to play on the keyboard, not include in my tracks. I like making things from scratch, but there are times when i hear a lead that is close to what i want - then i just mess with it until i get what i want. I do like having my own sample library though. I've been so unmotivated since i got my imac (go FUCKING figure, huh?) to make music that i think im gonna spend time building up a good sample library...

I agree with this. Theres a few sounds on my ms2000 where I wondered "how did they f*cking do that?!?!?". I think it helps understand the instrument a little more and can help you get some wicked sounds, new synthesis techniques etc...

Now and again i do, there's always some sort of tweaking though i'm sure.
