WHAT IS DUBSTEP

How can dubstep be defined?

Is it by tempo? Style perhaps? Is it a typical defining rhythm? Is it all about the vibe?

Perhaps - is it simply electronic chilled dub full of sub attacks?

I just don't know, I'm not trying to be funny. Can people describe to me what dubstep is to them, and how and why it deserves a new genre of it's own.

Help??!!

I'll check out the production when I have some more time. Looking forward to hearing some of you producers :)

Thanks to anyone who has given descriptions! There's clearly alot of love for this style, sounds like a good scene.

To anyone who dislikes questions and topics like this - it's quite simple, don't waste your time reading them or replying to them and perhaps you won't be quite as bitter about them. Nuff said.

dubstep is born when old metalheadz dnb slowed down meets shitty digidub with fruity loops presets at 140 bpm.

It's played on banjo with choral singing over the top of it, with a 4/7 beat and lyrical themes including sodomy, the smiles on chickens faces and suchlike

I am in the middle of attempting to produce my first dubstp tune and I keep asking myself 'is it dubstep'.

The answer is 'i do not know'!! I am not sure if anybody else really does.

It is a difficult sound to pigeon hole, so many different tunes, beats, styles, producers.

The slowed down style of horror show to faster more intense tunes - who knows.

The only common theme when this subject is debated is BPM.

It seems to fit in well with many age groups and scenes.

I am 30 and have listened to reggae, hip hop, soul, jungle, rave, techno, acid, DnB, Broken Beat (as have many others on the board), and Dubstep seems like a vibe that crosses ,any of the above.

It also seems to capture its own sub-drug culture (see other posts on this forum), which has historically been very important for specific genres.

All I can say is, for me, now, it is the best music I have heard for a long time. Prior to dubstep I was listening to lots of old tracks (including Dub - King Tubby, Mad Prof etc), plus some hip hop. Now Dubstep is my main focus (in car, mp3 player, work).

Dubstep has also got me buying vinyl again.

Long may it last!

dont think it can be put in words. i've tried to explain it to the uninitiated, and it sounds stupid. me and my girl almost got into it this weekend cause of this issue.

when you start tryin to categorize music by words, you start comin up with music-critic, masterbatory labels like IDM, breakstep, grindcore...

just listen to it, and if it speaks to you, then you got it.
