How do I make a good tune?

Well, I've been making a lot of music recently, but it's just not 'good' if you know what I mean.

I'm having trouble getting my drums to sound right, and making my bass work with my drums so they sound 'proper' and 'professional'.

If anyone has any VST and VSTi plugins that will improve my music, I would really appreciate links to them. Preferably free because I'm not going to spend money on software.

Also, can anyone explain how an EQ and compressor works?

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

lol quite funny topic name...

tip 1. : just search articles and movies about mixdowns. There are some of them. read, read, read, read, read, watch, watch, read, read

it sounds very boring and yes it is but you gonna understand what you're using and youll use youre creativity differently even in mixing itself

have you tried smearing the side of your face with peanut butter?

It has to be the chunky variety to effectively damp down the standing waves, but with a bit of trial and error you can really improve the sound.

also, i find a teaspoonful of marmalade carefully placed in the center of my speakers woofer does wonders. gives bass a much warmer, slower impetus, which can really help with dubstep.

failing that, crush some digestive biscuits and fill your speakers with as much as you can afford. many speakers have holes in them for this very purpose, known as "biscuit holes".

If you really want results you're gonna need to sidechain that peanut butter with the marmalade in the woofers.

Stop buying £10 bags.
Save some money bulk buy.
The extra cash you put towards some decent software/equipment.

What about a 4x4 bassline? its way better than the wobble.

The simple answer is that you don't need to. Just make a shit tune, but lace it with some Scarface samples. Win win win.

yeah pretty much. add some wobble, know the right people, or make a dubstep "downtempo" tune with bass.

the forum isn't so bad

all the "n00b" type questions are because more people are getting into dubstep and trying to make dubstep

and I think that is a good thing

Sure you still get valuable answers to good questions but I'm kinda fed up with reading questions the search button would answer and have the same boring sarcastic answers anytime. Don't see the point with production.
But that, of course, is just me.
