ive heard some unexpected people say that this little thing is badass...

But I would never buy it without trying it out some first.

I think they seem pretty awesome. They've sold out in Tokyo though so it will probably be awhile before you can find one. I'd definitely get one though.

I think the fact it lacks MIDI capabilities does limit it somewhat, especially in a live setup, but as a production tool it could be invaluable.

The main thing IMO is that it can be run off batteries. This means you could, in theory, take one with a set of headphones and a minidisc recorder and just go and sit somewhere, like a park or the back of a bus, and just piss about with making noises & whatnot and recording, getting different sounds from the different locations you find yourself in.

Then take the thing home, upload the minidisc recording to your computer and chop away. You'll have a recording of various noises and whatnot that can be messed with in any way you see fit.

Funny - re: live tool vs. production tool - I was thinking the opposite, because despite the fact that ya can't yoke it into a midi chain it *is* tiny, portable, and has a simple interface; not too much depth of functionality (at least from what I can tell in the specs) but very realtime-friendly. Ultimately though anything that makes sound in any way can be used for either live giggin' or producing - you're only limited by imagination (or sumfin' like that anyways).

15 Years ago or so this dude I knew told me about his buddy who had a live rig that fit into a fat 3 ring binder - think it had a powerstrip up the spine and the left side had something like a Yamaha QY-20 and a Boss drum machine, midi-synched; the right side had a bunch of guitar stompbox FX like rvb., delay, phase, etc. At the time the idea really impressed me - and thinking about the gear that's out there NOW, like the Line6 multiFX units, Kaoss pads, the Boss mini phrase sampler, Behringer minimixer... and this little baby... the idea could be pretty fuggin cool. Of course some bastard would probably say "why don't you just get a laptop?" but laptop-rock leaves me cold. I'd rather watch someone rock the knobs and faders than type in command lines and click a mouse. But that's just me.

Anyways-

I do like Wub's idea of using it as a sort of portable doodlepad for stuff to cut & mangle later on, too. Hell, I just use my minidisc and record shit that I hear on the street and edit that stuff...

One thing tho: Korgs have never really done it for me in the bass synth department. Nice pads & strings & such, but not really many good basses. IMHO.

I can see Korg adding MIDI and even USB MIDI. this is a device that was always going to happen! I reckon they will release a drum machine version next! The build quality is still pretty dodgy but hey they sound pretty good!

One other thing that I seem to be having a hard time figuring out since it's not anywhere in their specs or in the two videos I've watched: is it true synthesis where you're stacking envelopes, ADSR curves, lfo's etc. from the ground up - or is it a bunch of presets that are somewhat tweakable?

It is a toy , but the way i see it is theer wil be allot of younger people playing with theese than shooting eatchother . or shit maybe they wil shoot eatchother to steal them from one another . ohh no. !! korg what have you done. !!
haah if the thing had midi i think it would be fucking sick for dubstep cause it changes arp's , textures, notes on the fly ..

looks ok but like someone else said the chances of actually making a decent tune don't seem there. i have a kp3 kaoss pad and its fairly decent to fuck about with, its useable as a midi controller too, all be it a shit one, but its fun to fuck about with. my beef with these korg releases is that any function any of them have are achievable on other devices or programs with better results. i would never get rid of my kaoss pad, i saved for time untill i got the pee's for it but it just a toy, this seems to be the same. its the sort of thing i would love a mate to buy so i could have a rinse but wouldn't waste the money myself.

yea i got bought one for my birthday and its quite fun but i wouldnt spend my own money on it
