As you are no doubt aware, Grooverider
has been sentenced to a jail term of
FOUR YEARS in Dubai! Four years for
forgetting about a tiny amount of cannabis
in his baggage, which is no threat to the UAE
society,is in our eyes an extreme penalty for
this victim less and minor offense.
Obviously we are doing all we can to
give his lawyers the support they need
to try and establish an early release for
Grooverider but you can also do your bit to help.
If you haven't done already, please take one
minute to sign the online petition below
to show your support for Groove ASAP:
http://www.petitiononline.com/gr00v3/
If you are a company director or work
for a company please send an email
stating your company's support for
Grooverider and asking for his immediate
release so that we can pass on to his
lawyer in Dubai if needed ASAP.
email -
sarah@grooveconnection.co.uk
Please remember that this could have
been any one of us in this
please do your bit to help.

for a man doing some thing with his life 4 years could be like a life sentence and I can see how he could have made the mistake of not knowing he was carrying the urb on him I've done it before in a rush and a lot of things to do before I had to jump on the plane .

the UAE does not care about petitions...
Although he was granted celmency after a few months, they jailed a 36-year-old former UN worker, he blamed his own negligence for his April arrest at Dubai International Airport, on a 1 hour stopover, travelling between Afghanistan and Canada, where he was found with two poppy bulbs and a small quantity of hashish.
Despite his efforts to explain the poppy bulbs were old and would only be used for educational purposes and that the hashish - 0.06 grams - was residue from handling it daily in Afghanistan as an anti-narcotics officer, he was sentenced to four years in prison.
now if that can happen to a anti narcotics officer working for the UN, i would be damn sure that i cleaned my bags out b4 my flight. And while i personally think its ridiculous to jail anyone for drugs (particularly marijuana) ignorance is no excuse.
If you're going to travel, its the responsibility of the traveller to make sure they know and abide by the laws of whatever country they're in. In dubai, drugs in your bloodstream can be considered posession and get you 4 years! Grooverider ddint take care and it cost him big time. Sadly, i dont think Groove's got the UN to make his case for him. see you in 4 years, heres hoping he'll have a career again. just my 2 cents.

this isn't gonna work, might have if he was wrongly put in jail but as he went through the full procedure of court and sentencing in what seemed to be in a fair manner he's not gonna get out with this, the best bet if you really care would be to write to the foreign office asking them to talk to Dubai about getting him brought back to the UK - where he will serve a reduced sentence

This is 2008. Getting 4 years for minor possesion of _ANY_ drug is ridiculous.
Fair enough if he had 2 grams of anthrax or something but 2g of some weed? UAE is clearly stuck in the middle ages.

this petition is useless. no court will ever recognize a net petition signed by anonymous. waste of time.

I'd rather see this chap freed than Grooverider.
4 years for a crumb under his shoe...where are the petitions for him? Oh, of course, he's a youth worker, not a DJ.

it's admirable that you want to help, and i agree that the sentence is disproportionate, but it is ridiculous to suggest an on-line petition is going to change the law/bring about a pardon in a sovereign nation like dubai.
i'd put your efforts into helping in a different way somehow.

good call.
we could try antagonising the authorities in Dubai by sending them hundreds of boxes full of Solpadeine, Co-Codamol and Night Nurse. That'll teach the buggers.

well its bad luck for him but to be honest why should i sign? he knows the law there is tough so why risk it if your gonna complain about getting jail???
i went down in my OWN country and i knew what i was risking beforehand....
still didnt moan and have people sign shit useless petitions!!!!
mind you it was a fairly naughty amount i got done for.....
oh,
but i did occasionally moan at my mates to drop me off some cigarettes and green when they visited
