hi first post and first time going out buying dub this weekend ive been saving the pennies so i just thought id ask is there any "essential" dubstep or "classics" because ive litterally just got into dubstep and want to be bringing home the bangers to shake my houses foundations

Hard question :?
I'd try and get:
Skream - midnight request line
Mala - lean forward
Loefah - Mud/ Ruffage
Goth Trad - Cut end/ Flags

actually it would take me too long to list the essential's. Just listen to some mixes from barefiles.com or getdarker.com (try and get them with tracklist) andsee what you like. Good luck :4:

edit: by the way I just managed to spend £113 on vinyl tonight, and I thought I had all the records I wanted (that were still available on vinyl) :?

Think the best way to help ye is to list record labels to look through. No point just buying a load of bangers to do a set with, or just buying loadsa songs which people have recommended, find what you think are essentials and craft your own vibe! :)

My Personnel Favourite Dubstep Labels Are:
Hyperdub
Punch Drunk
Deep Medi
Hot Flush

I'd say start there and see where it takes you :)

Good Luck & Enjoy!

Very true, when I look at the best sellers or recommended charts on record websites I tend to disagree with a lot of it.

What I always do is find a track i like, search for all tracks on the record label and see if anything takes your fancy. Even if you only know 5 tracks, thats maybe 4/5 record lables to sprunge over.
Good luck and welcome to a downward spiral of spending every penny you can beg borrow and steal on dub :D

a good place to start would be to try and pick up as many of the DMZ represses as you can possibly lay your grubby mits on.

on this note on average how much do you spend on vinyl a month?
im regularly hittin the £200 mark sometimes more (not just dubstep tho) and ive still got some epic "tunes to buy" notebook file.
sooo much good music around atm, its jus selfish tbh

It really depends on your individual tastes, but you can't got far wrong with the 'The Knowledge' and 'Like Sun' 12" by Toasty if you can find it. Two completely different and brilliant tracks.

Seems like I said a good piece of advice for a change! (bout time!!!)

Anyways:

Have been considering getting serato for sometime but weighin up the pro's and con's makes me doubt whether it is a wise decision or not.

It is silly the amount you spend on records but at the same time alot of tunes are vinyl only release (or more to the point not digital releases) so you'd still have to spend the money.

And I have this foul hatred for MP3's aswell, digital media is the way to go but not with a shite format like that! So you'd be buying vinyl, converting them to FLAC or WAV (preferably) which means you'll need a massive harddrive (which Im afraid costs alot in a laptop), then you've actually got the cost of the laptop, serato, specific digital track needles.

And the only two real advantages I see are:
1. Dont have to carry round a heap of records.
2. Can switch songs easier
3. Easier to play unreleased tunes as you can just use an MP3(urgh)

..............................and then your laptop crashes mid gig..................

I normally spend about £20 a week and then a bulk buy when I get my paycheck, not sure how much that is but I am a student so it's alot for me :(

Unfortunatly at the moment I spend absolutely fook all on records as I am broke broke broke and...... unemployed :(

However just before I was "dismissed" I splashed out on a new mixer and another set of technics so I suppose its not all bad hehe

Used to spend about 50/60quid a fortnight, however I imagine no matter how much money you have you always end up spending a load of ze vinyl.

What tunes did you end up getting then bro?

dmz - anti war dub.

don't go for the cheap ones though, if its under £200 its not a genuine pressing!

I find BoomKat.com media player is great for listening to tunes, checking other releases on the lable and artist.

Good way to listen to loads of new and old records easily.

Cheers, all. I'm new here too, and I wanted to big-up this board for being so eager to lend a hand to "newer ears," etc.

It's refreshing that there isn't much attitude here at all when it comes to this stuff, and that everyone is all about sharing knowledge. Thanks!
