Dunno man, it's always a hard one to play, cos djs are partly responsible for turning your sound into something that means something outside of your own bedroom. But at the same time if you only think about djs when you're making tunes you're not gonna be true to yourself.

I guess it's about finding a balance.

i think the best producers acknowledge the turntable, then completely ignore it.

music aimed at djs is usually boring. i mean see drum and bass and house/techno these days, they're well booooring.

I think most dubstep dj's are actually pretty damn good at mixing some tricky stuff, so I wouldn't worry too much. If it's a good tune they'll drop it, whether it has a 32 bar intro or not, which is a hell of a lot more than I can say about typical house/techno djs.

Yeah, true, and I tend to think the sort of DJs who I respect and who I'd be really hoping to get play from are also the sort of DJs who don't mind having to put a bit of effort in to the mix if the tune's good, or who value interesting selection over tight mixing.

I'm not sure I like the "fuck DJs, make music for yourself" attitude, though. For me, dubstep is about community and about the scene and it got where it is by the influence of DJs getting stuff out there and stuff getting played in clubs, and I don't think it's a bad thing to want to give something back to the scene with your music, and not just sit in your room doing it for yourself. It's kind of like a jazz musician having to fit in with what the rest of the band are doing even if that means not doing purely and entirely what they want to do at all times, except that in dance music you're collaborating with the whole scene.

In short, tailoring music to lazy DJs = bad, thinking about making tunes to get played out = not bad. I think Goldie once said that what's interesting is trying to make something that's musical and mixable.

Btw, another good anecdote along similar lines was Schoenberg being told that "you concerto is unplayable - violinists would have to grow and extra finger."

In regards to dubstep, you gotta ask is it dance music? If so its aimed at the dance floor ergo the DJ. Or do you just go fuck it and make tunes how you like, i'm pretty sure thats how everyone does it.

Erm, you can do what you like, but imo if you're not making dance music, you're not making dubstep. You're making dubby IDM or bass heavy ambient or something new and nameless, but while it might be dubstep influenced and it might cop a lot of its sounds from dubstep, it's not dubstep.

(Before anyone accuses me of being a genre fascist, that's pretty much the only hard and fast requirement I'd make to consider something dubstep.)

Mixing is over-rated anyway. The problem with DJs is that too many of them think they're something special because evolution has gifted them opposable thumbs and the ability to count to 4.
