Isn't it already happening though? Can't imagine someone going into a dubstep night being into every possible style as quite a lot of them seem utterly unrelated now.

I'm glad the thread title is about stopping subgenres rather than unusual avian practises anyway

I think there two kind of evolution

the breakcore one mean that everything you should call breakcore is breakcore even if some look like dnb( old bong ra or enduser) some like noise and so on... The label breakcore means more a community of people and party than a strict musical description ! the good point is that everything is open and people stay creative... the bad one is that the community lack of cohesion and in fact it doesn't evolve much this day.. most of the time the same overdistorded amen + gabba kick business

the drum'n'bass one mean that everything is labeled under subsubsublabel.... but the people don't communicate much you'll probably won't find techstep at a liquid party and so on...You will probably have dark party with darkstep and techstep and happy one with jump up and liquid ... The sublabel make the sound evolve fast but it's stay in is little producer stuff... (for exemple the nu techstep with raiden, panacea offkey, position chrome is wicked but it's really rare to hear it in party...)... in fact the sound evolve but it's so technical and producerfriendly that the party people are not connected to evolution

i dunno wich way dubstep is taking (perhaps this way are only in my imagination )
my 2 cents

theres a lot of producers that have thier own invidiual styles obviously but thsi name calling shit is what killed drum n bass for me

its dubstep, just love it, lol

hmm just enjoy dubstep like a magical box full of tunes, all different from one another and like a tune or not like it... i wouldnt regard it as "subgenres" because a good set for me has them all mixed up to create diversion, tension and keep me interested. funky steppers, wonky bangers, dubby skankers and everything in between (theres a lot!!) ...thats what makes dubstep dubstep for me.

as soon as a sub-genre appears it just means its another formula to be avoided

If there wasn’t so much mediocre stuff being released (which is bound to happen as a scene grows and the number of producers increases) there would be a lesser need for sub-genres. Sub-genres, like it or not, make it much easier to sift through x amount of releases to find something you like.

Not everyone is going to like every single dubstep release or style of dubstep, no biggie. Pointless trying to fight the inevitable.

Yeah, I sometimes worry that a couple of years down the line dubstep's going to be in something a bit like an abusive relationship where everyone's going to be going "god I hate all those tunes and those nights, they're totally ruining the scene,but we've got to keep it all together because subgenres killed drum and bass."
