so where do people think dubstep will be in the next few years?? i've heard so many different styles at gigs and in mixes, do you think these different styles will become sub genres themselves? almost like the drum n bass scene has all these sub genres techstep, liquid, neuro funk etc.

i know it offends some people but it is true, things do get put into categories.

I think that by 2010 noone will release any records because they'll all be too busy worrying about whether they're going to get categorized into a subgenre.

Seriously, this thing with the subgenres is getting like someone who reminds everyone who'll listen that they're definitely not gay every five minutes. If people are that worried about getting pigeonholed they just shouldn't make tunes that sound like other people's tunes.

Dubstep will cease to be popular amongst humans in the next months...and will be played underwater exclusively for lobsters/crabs/squid

The Night video was actually part of a machiavellian marketing scheme targetting the lucrative cephalopod market.

mate, who said anything about being worried about getting pigeonholed? who cares that much really. just do what you like and ppl can call it whatever they want it still doesn't change the music. but ppl call it different names to get an idea across of what sorta sound it is they're talking about. if i said i listened to dubstep, thats a whole lot of different styles and sounds in one. if i said i liked the more heavier, reecey bass, techno sorta stuff then you would know what i would be lookin for. same if i said i like the more lighter spacey stuff. a name doesn't change the music, its only a way of being able to talk about the style or sound of it.

And that's not a bad thing necessarily. It's Darwinism, it's mutation - the same way that people carved out sounds based on what they wanted to hear in DnB, same thing's already happening w/ Dubstep.

Some peeps want it to be dancefloor biz and hold fast to that aspect of it, favoring tunes that are mix-friendly and get all de gyals dem up on the floor...

Some want it to be hard as fuck, like NWA meets Throbbing Gristle, and actually like it when chicks get scared of the sounds...

And some people just want a catchy likkle choon they can walk around whistling all day and raise their glass to at night with their pals...

Everybody uses music differently and identifies with different stuff for different reasons. Genres, names, categorization happens after the fact.

Now that's probably the closest to the truth. Although I reckon there will be more than one breakaway scenes.
