although the techniques and aesthetics of jamaican dub have influenced much of modern music, the connections between dub and techno are pronounced. in this regard, credit must given to the berlin record store—hard wax—and their distribution of basic channel, chain reaction and rhythm & sound material. so it's no surprise that hard wax has embraced the UK's latest dub-influenced export and fostered a growing pollination between dubstep and techno (see ricardo villalobos and t++ remixes of shackleton, and the recent dj sets of surgeon.) with that in mind, we have brought together the top dubstep DJ in the states, joe nice, with a line-up of compelling chicago talent representing dubstep, techno and everything in between. don't miss this unique event on chicago's best sound system.

>JOE NICE
carting his box of acetates across the country, and even across the pond, joe nice is widely regarded as the top dubstep DJ in the US.hailing from baltimore, maryland, joe nice started his career dj'ing the now popular "baltimore club" sound in 1992. but it wasn't until 2002—when dubstep was still considered a subgenre of uk garage/2 step--that, after watching a set by the uk's hatcha, joe said, "i went home and just realized 'that's the sound i wanna represent.'" in 2005, joe nice co-founded the irregular, dub war night in new york city and by 2006 found himself embraced by a notoriously insular uk scene: playing at london's dmz, commanding rare dubplates from uk producers and featured in the bbc documentary "the sound of dubstep." don't miss the return of baltimore's finest!

>KARL MEIER
whether it's his imposing taste or imposing height, veteran chicago dj karl meier needs little introduction. meier has played alongside techno stalwarts surgeon, the advent and kevin saunderson, to name a few, and his knowledge of the genre is matched by few in the city. expect a heady mix of hardwax classics and hidden gems.

>SEARCHL1TE
no matter the tools or the medium, searchl1te (aka kee -bassByThePound crew) lays out fierce, cavernous, densely-layered, hauntingly beautiful, eclectic mixes and tunes. on the decks or as a live p.a. of all original material, searchl1te bombs the sarcopha-beats, yard techno, and tech:freek biz. His tunes are loaded with his own field recordings from bum-fuk-everywhere as well as obscure samples from an amazingly nerdy collection of music from around the world. searchl1te is the founder of part time sucker radio. he's been doing non-commercial radio for over a decade, most recently with WNUR 89.3-FM chicago, vocalo 89.5-FM Chicago, http://www.destroyer.net, http://www.dnbradio.com, and http://www.dubstep.fm. part time sucker radio serves as a creative outlet for the crew, as well as for forward-thinking dj's, producers, and musicians in, or as they come through, the midwestern U.S. as his day gig, searchl1te teaches reading, writing, and music production to incarcerated kids in chicago. visit www. FreeWriteJailArts. org to peep the latest
publications of writing and art or to listen to tracks produced and performed by his students.

>CHRIS WIDMAN
chris widman is a DJ that defies easy classification. host of the weekly radio program abstract science (on WLUW 88.7fm) since it's inception in 1997 and a dj since 1995, his cohesive sets intertwine records from across the electronic music spectrum and beyond. widman's comprehensive approach has led to billing with underground luminaries amon tobin, apparat, cinematic orchestra, daedelus, deadbeat, dosh, isotope 217, jaga jazzist, jan jelinek, john tejada, meat beat manifesto, monolake, mr. scruff, phon.o, the orb, scanner, sleeparchive, UNKLE, telefon tel aviv and ulrich schnauss, not to mention appearances at resfest, the Chicago world music festival, chicago's museum of contemporary art, Chicago cultural center, the rhinocererous theatre festival, LA's dublab. com, germany's club bogaloo, and many of chicago's choice venues (including metro, empty bottle, abbey pub, double door and residencies at smartbar and sonotheque.)

>m50
m50 is a menace. if you party in or around chicago, you have probably heard his radio show on 89.3 FM-WNUR at least one friday night, on the way to or from a show, perhaps while preparing or recovering at home. etc-radio's eclecticism has been a staple in chicago for years. m50's party sets have a sensual flow and energy that has found itself at home alongside top-tier international artists and underground house parties alike, fusing diverse
interests in deep house, minimal techno, and hard electro. this event will represent the club debut of his tag-team work with abstract science's chris widman.

>PHADED
phaded began his affair with the beat in the late 90's, doing production and later dj'ing a blend of underground hiphop, downtempo and dub tracks. Inspired by the musical brilliance of producers and artists spanning a vast number of genres, there was a constant compulsion to present some of the most underground of sounds and rhythms in his sets. becoming part of the emerging dubstep scene in the US was only a natural progression for
phaded, as it tapped into the many facets of his musical foundation. over the last year there has been great success for his weekly broadcast—the dented sessions on dubstep. fm—as well as dropping crowd-pleasing performances around the midwest US. 2008 only looks brighter for this sub junkie, with an eye toward lending more his own productions to the scene in upcoming months. be ready for some bass weight with phaded when you enter the building.

Soooooooooo pumped for this. I've only heard one dubstep song spun on this soundsystem ever, the last time I saw Hot Chip DJ there (after their show at the Vic), one of the guys played the Tes La Rock remix of Round the World Girls at the very end of his set..
