Why did they axe the show? Good question, this was their response:

You may find it a shock to get a reply, but I do believe that all 1Xtra listeners where possible should get answers to issues close to mind.

May I first say that as the man who hired J Da Flex three years ago and then had to let him go, the decision was not taken lightly. There will always be someone disappointed with change and some very happy. Although I let J Da Flex go it came as no surprise to him as we had been communicating regularly and his change in musical direction was always going to make us a station make some harsh choices. I'm not sure how long you have been listening to the station, but if you have been for at least two years you would be fully aware that J Da Flex has tried to redefine his sound. His show fell under the UKG banner one which at the point of his departure he was not happy with (I must say nor was I). At the point of his last show it was clearly a broken beat show and often 30% of his show was a duplicate of Benji B's show. You can imagine hiring an a man for a leading role and years later finding out that it was a woman! This was kind of the equivalent.......

The ongoing talks we had was along the line of him being hired to present a UKG show and now it was something else. I'm not debating that it was not a good show, but not what he was signed up for. Being clued up on the scene I can assure you this sound is very much focused around a London/South scene. We must remember two things:

1. We are a national radio station and a show appealing to just mainly the South is not an option.
2. I wanted a UKG show not a UKG show which mutated over time into something else with no consultation.

I'm no novice - I help set up Kiss 100 was a DJ there and in charge of all specialist output.. I produced over 5 specialist shows at Radio 1 before moving to set up 1Xtra. I'm aware of all the new musical genres ands it's importance to reflect them. Benji B highlights many of the artists which J Da Flex did and many of the guests he has featured have appeared over time on the network so I have no fear that the sound will still be a part our musical makeup. Should at a later date I feel that this sound warrants a national show then I will look again. I do hope that you will still listen to 1Xtra and perhaps if you spot new talent or a sound drop Lee a line.

In the meantime thank you for your comments and I hope this message (will not bring back your DJ) goes someway to explaining this change.

yeah, maybe it's tricky for them to separate it from the grime /home grown shows.
this is a tight-knit community, and Dubstep hasn't poked its head above water yet.

but hell, man... this isn't radio1, it's 1xtra!
they really should be reppin their ends - let's keep the pressure up :)

interesting reply, eskay...
Big up the BBC for communicating with its public ;)

I've only ever listened to 1xtra online, so didn't know about J Da Flex's content specifically (hadn't checked it out).
Ras Kwame on radio1 has been spinnin some Broken Beat recently, but it's interesting to change your whole style!

I say they should introduce a dubstep track into their day playlist and see what happens.
Either that or start a graveyard slot and negotate better times later.

I am not a purist or anything but I meant a 'strictly' dubstep show...
1xtra is getting late... :!:

It covered 30% of Benji B's show?!?

But when you think bout it... you listen to the likes of Choice, Kiss, its same ol' shit at a different time of the day, throughout the week!!!

J Da repped a good show and had a good following. I want him bk

There's two issues here though: "why does a second broken beat show not work?" and "should 1Xtra cover dubstep?"

The letter answers the former but not the latter.

Deffo a Dubstep show. How can they not when it has a such a strong user base? A radio has a duty to its listeners!

In regards to J Da Flex's show getting the axe I can see the point after reading the response from 1 Xtra. I used to listen to his show on saturdays but after they moved it to tuesday (I think) the music clearly changed and I stopped listening to it. But the man had a really good show back in the day - no doubt about that...

Very interesting reading the BBC's response (can't believe you got one to be honest) it looks to me of just another way of sticking to their rules and playing safe.

I always locked to J da's show.. The man pushed the sound and mixed it up with all different shit, which for me is important. I discovered some artists I’d never had probably check out before. I was never a big fan of UKG, but he made me aware of some of the decent UKG artists out there.. I got into broken beatz more from listening to his show, he was playing fresh dubstep and even made space for unsigned tracks... What more do ya want?

I'm sure fans of UKG and broken beat got into dubstep and visa versa..

BBC needs to wake up - Not about the stats listen to the fucking Dj...

Shouts to Mary Ann Hobbs... Least we got someone on the inside, but IMO losing J da was a big mistake

bit off topic but j da flex did one of the heaviest sets i've ever seen at fwd a couple of years ago - think he was first on that night. proper hatcha / youngsta stylee but soooo heavy. the bass was rattlin the teeth round in my head.
