Sidechaining in Fruity

a-up peeps.

Biggest thing that's killing my mixes (for my dubstep and DNB) is the kick drum being anihilated by the bassline and am i right to believe this can be solved with sidechain/compression?

I do a bit of compression but it's only guessing really but sidechain seems to be the word that keeps popping up when i read up on this problem.

Anyone do this in FL or know of a better way plus things i may need.

Thanks in advance!

I believe you can use the peak controller to duck the volume on the bass.

There is a tutorial on how to do this sort a thing at:

http://www.warbeats.com/Forums/tabid/59 ... fault.aspx

You should be able to get the hang of the peak controller pretty quickly if you pay attention to the video.

the quickest/bluntest way it can be done is to have a kick and a bass hooked to two seperate channels on the mixer. at the start of the kick effect chain place a Fruity Peak Controller. open it and load the preset SideChain or whatever its called (i think it has only a few presets so you should find it). once you've done this right click on what you want to sidechain, for an easy example right click on the volume of your bass (on themixer or anywhere) and click Link to Controller. once in there in the main drop down menu it should say something like Peak Controller Peak + LFO. click that and then accept. it should now be 'sidechained' to your kick. you may need to invert this relationship (to be found at the bottom of the Link to Controller menu) for it to dip when it hits rather than raising to full when the kick hits. this is a simple sidecahin. if you want to learn how to just its dynamic (one of the most important aspects and a 100% must) then you can go into the Peak Controller on your kick mixer channel and change things like the Base, the Volume, the Tension, all having a different effect on the way the sidechained sound comes in and out, if that makes sense.

this will be clumsy though which is where your experimentation comes in? try sidechaining EVERYTHING and you will learn lots about alsorts. by now there must be a hundred videos showing the basics. the question has been going round for years.

Two different ways;

SIDECHAINING TUTORIAL # 1

there's two ways (that i'm going to say) that you can sidechain a bassline. first of all is the easy way (which doesnt sound as good, mind you).
1.Open up Fl Studio and make a new project thingy. Thats what i call them.
2.NEXT!!! get a kick drum and a bassline going. admire your work. you've done a fine job so far.
3.The tricky part!!! Open the mixer.
4.Link the kick channel and the bass channel to seperate tracks. like insert one and insert two.
5.Load a peak controller for the kick. remember to make sure it isnt muted, or you wont be able to hear it (obviously).
6.Load a compressor for the bass. Link the compressor ratio for the bass to the peak for the kick (Right click the ratio thingy>link to controller>internal controller>Peak ctrl(kick) - Peak.).
7.Fiddle with the treshold till your satisfied.

And the other....

SIDECHAINING TUTORIAL # 1

now the equally as easy, and much better sounding way of doing it!
1.follow steps 1,2,3,4 and 5 above.
2.load a fruity balance into the bass channel. good so far?
3.link the volume on the balance to the peak on the kick.
4.input the mapping formula "1-input/2" (without the quotes)
you can change the volume of the bass by messing around with the /2 bit on the formula.

u tried just eq'ing your kick to sit around 80-100 hz? n EQ ur bass to below that. if its quite a middly bass, split the bass n middle up using an audio splitter and eq ur midd above 100 and your low below 80 so the kick sits nicely inbetween them
