One of the most influential rock bands ever. Quite an achievement considering they sold about 500 records when they were together and the bass player didn't get a royalty cheque until 1986. The album I keep returning to is 'V.U 1969'.

YES! This is one of the tiny handful of perfect albums ever made. There's not a bad song on it, and the track arrangement is perfect. Something for everybody.

god I love VU!!!
I actually have a story about Sterling Morrison.
I had a friend many years back who was an artist. He had an art opening and afterparty that was attended by Sterling Morrison, so I actually got to meet him. This was in late 1989. He was witty, funny and sarcastic to the extreme. Anyway, we're all sitting outside at the party in a circle and smoking, and I get up to go to the bathroom inside. The next thing I know, I wake up laying on the ground. I think I'm still outside. As I come to a little more, I realize that I'm laying on the kitchen floor surrounded by people. Apparently, I passed out just as I went into the house, fell on the floor, and hit my head on the door jamb. Needless to say, I was a bit embarrassed. Everyone was totally cool and we got back to the business of cracking jokes, getting drunk and swapping funny stories. God, he HATED Lou Reed and John Cale. Called them thieves, assholes and many other names I can't remember after 20 years. At that point he was a ferry pilot, running the Sabine Pass ferry on the border of Texas and Louisiana. Imagine that, someone with a masters' degree piloting a ferry.

"black angels death song" from their first record blew me completely away when i heard it for the first time. i'd never expected that much guitar-noise on an album from 1967. after listening to that song listening to sonic youth wasn't the same again...

White Light/White Heat has aged better than almost any other record in the 20th century. All the aggression still feels fresh, the songs are brilliant, and SISTER RAY!!!
Also, it has The Gift, which I still remember vividly(it's been a while since I heard this album last).

I like the guitar solo on Heroin, the one which is just one note yet is badass somehow.

Their first three albums are absolutely required listening. 'Loaded' not so much but there is some good stuff there and 'VU' is fantastic. The Bataclan live disc is worth a listen too although the sound quality is pretty horrendous.

They're definitely essential listening - when I first heard The Gift I was actually so drawn into the story I forgot about the noise in the other earphone.
