I've heard some people say of some artist and tracks.. 'that doesn't sound like dubstep'.. Which made me think.. Would there ever have been any forward progression in any genre if everyone tried to make tunes that sound exactly like all the other tunes?

Also, seems like any dubstep tunes that sound influenced by 'garage' or 'techno' are ok with most dubstep heads and labels.. but the second a lot of people hear a 'jungle' influenced dubstep tune.. it is almost always scoffed at as 'sounding too much like jungle'.

Personally, i say whether something is dubstep or not - just play good tunes!

There's lots of good stuff that will fit into a dubstep set that isn't "proper" dubstep....and thats a good thing!

the reason why a lot of people don't like a lot of mid-range is because, sonically, it goes some way to negating one of the main foundations of the ethos of the sound. Mids eat into the headroom, taking up space/volume that the subs would occupy so there's less room for bass.

part of the reason it's crept into dubstep, along with the influx of (ex-)DnB heads, is that when you're playing bass-driven music you need a big system to deliver a welly-load of bass which shakes people about in order for punters to experience the full effect. On inferior/small systems, the physicality of bass music is lost, so instead DJs/producers rely on midrange to deliver the energy in the audible range to ensure that people actually dance. As the music has spread, it has been played in far more clubs where promoters/clubowners are unable/unwilling to provide the sort of soundsytems which deliver a true physical bass experience, hence the prevalence and spread of the midrange sound.


Music evolves, midrange in dubstep is simply a fact of life, but it is definitely a mutation which greatly dilutes one of the original ideals behind the music.

if you think you can run this music on self powered speakers then you miss the point completely. this is soundsystem music. that means a truck full of speakers and amps, crossovers and box men. promoters need to understand this.....

i gotta disagree with most of that. sorry. im not gonna pick through it all but theres a shit load of crap in that post. how extremely boring would the genre be if every fucking tune was purley sub bass/808's. midrange didnt come into the genre as some answer to small sound systems and sure as hell isnt diluting anything. i just cant buy this asesment at all.

im not even sure if ive heard a descent sound system since the last time I saw Aba Shanti-i.

I know this is outspoken but IMHO the Mass system is only good if you get a spot next to the stack and the 3rd Bass system isn't "warm", it is "distorted".

When I listen to, produce and dj 140bpm bass heavy music (dubstep/comastep/rapstep nstfu) if I dont listen to it on a massive rig I'm doing it wrong?

And I won't begin to go into the technicals about a mixdown between mids/lows...lord knows that's been gone over morethan a few times on here and the answer is that dubstep has magic low sonic qualities that nobody really understands, but its got moar bass than any music ever created before init
