Was having a conversation with some mates earlier about who started saying dubstep first and whether its common knowledge or what?? When did the word actually start to appear, anyone got any theories?

I *think* it was in a tempa/ammunition promotions press release for a horsepower productions record that came out on tempa.

Slaughter Mob used the phrase to describe their music at the time , around 2003, maybe sooner.

When ever they would be performing you would be likely to hear Dangerous or Vicious on the mic saying "we call it dubstep"

and before somebody smart has a go about the wikipedia page and the content in it, it's important to note that the origins section of that page is fought over weekly in definition and re-definition. just like other music sections on that site like let's say rnb, house, drum and bass etc, everyone and their brother larry thinks they have the be all and end all opinion about things. this is only a good thing in my mind.

definitions shouldn't be so rigid, but as the years go by, it's very important to have things historically in a concise place, and i think with the help of all the contributors and editors of the page, we're getting closer to that point, as far as the "origins".

It was Hatcha, according to Arthur 'Artwork' Smith, who first coined the term dubstep. "Benny Ill used to come in the shop. Back in the early garage days he was trying to make garage but he was putting the snare on the wrong beat, on the three beat. He was making dub reggae garage. We were like 'this is weird' but Hatcha loved it and called it dubstep. It was very dubby, but it wasn't 2-step. It was Benny Ill that started it, without a doubt."

I like that too, its great when people have an interesting and genuine opinion on where something came from.

The hatcha theory sounds deep, wonder if hatcha can clear that up??

First time Dubstep came up on a magazine – with a worldwide distribution – was back in 2002 at XLR8R cover... Wasn't it? Riddin.ca have some texts from this era... Big up Paul and Steve for this...

Interesting topic... No need to use it to divide people with music genres names... But... Looking with Indiana Jones glasses... It's very cool...

Also - Phillipa Reed in DJ Magaziune used the term when reviewing stuff from Horsepower, El-b and Ghost. (Around 2002 I think)
