Interesting choice for a fairly mainstream music awards. What do you reckon?

Will we see Dubstep blowing up into the mainstream in the same way that D&B did when Roni Size/Reprazent won it all that time ago...?

What do you think it is about his take on the genre/production that makes him stand out for this kind of recognition over other artists with dubstep albums to their name like Benga, The Bug etc?

There is a feeling his music evokes that can't easily be described, and it seems that it doesn't really matter what music genre your into, you can still relate and tap into it. Whereas other artist in the genre are making amazing tunes, yet their message may not cross mainstream boundaries as easily. That's my take at least.

Burial can be played on a shitty stereo with not much bass, I suppose that sets it apart from the rest of 'dubstep'... Somewhat radio friendly and accessable whilst being gritty and underground.. props, would like to see him win..

Dude, it's apples and oranges really. I think what people forget about with Burial is that like him or not, his music conveys some emotion, and the albums have been cohesive and original. Anyone from the scene getting a Mercury nomination is big so I'm happy for him.

And I don't think it will make the scene blow up or get biters on board. I mean the Roni Size thing was a bit different because the format was basically double bass + breakbeat = easy to rip off. I can't see someone trying to use a Burial ripoff track to sell hamburgers/cars/tampons/soft drink.

Dunno about that mate, some of the car ads have had some very different tunes on lately.

Can't really see him winning this though. Who'd pick up the prize?

id say burial is as likly to win as anyone else, like portishead, dizzee rascal, talvin singh and roni size have all won.

fucking terrible prize voted for by idiots but good luck to him, £20,000 + all the money form extra sales

If Radiohead win it will be the last nail in the coffin for the award...I hope Burial picks it up, Untrue is a sick record.

burial is the best ever artist to come out of the scene

what you people do not understand is that dubstep did not begin as huge wobble basslines and simple sub melodeys it was about doing something different

and that is what burial did b4 99 percent of artist in the scene plus hes done it better

plus even if you take dubstep out of the picture and take the radio frendly crap out t0o. burials music could match the best in any genre full stop

I do gotta say...I didnt want to say anything before (these arguments are loooong) but I didnt realise that you just rated caspa above burial Junglist. That makes me physically sick.

Caspa is good at making "dancefloor blah blah blah" or however he tries to justify it, but it is soulless, thoughtless shite. And conveys absoloutely no feeling/emotion whatsoever. Im guessing you think differently, but in my opinion the beauty of music is its ability to create feelings using a universally understood language - crossing borders, bringing us together etc. So especially when you are talking about an award in music (not to mention that its an album. Untrue vs. 'Ave it volume 2? ) burial is beyond the ideal choice.

Im going to have to suggest really giving his albums a go (rather than possibly having a listen through on some home speakers - volume down, while doing your tax return?). Actually listen to it, concentrate on the sound and really absorb it. I know that sounds like a patronising thing to say, but 99% of people I have met who say they do not like Burial have just not given it a chance.

Burial makes some of the most relaxed vibes ive ever heard in my life. He's in a league of his own!!!
