Tape Op is a really good one, and free if you live in the states. Audio Technology is an Australian one that isn't too bad - pretty rockist but they've done stuff with Klaus Hill and a few other more electronically inclined people.

Can't think of any more - I still haven't found the perfect one either.

It basically explains the history of everything audio and everything digital audio. In depth. With pictures and diagrams.

Is it up to date? I don't know, I haven't read the latest version.

But reckon that if you actually read this book cover to cover, there wouldn't be much modern stuff you didn't understand. Anything you didn't understand you could research further online (or in the library lol)

I rate it hard, simply because it explains the functioning of every bit of kit I'm ever likely to use in a studio. It's kind of like reading a meta manual for an entire studio!

Go on google books and read some of the content to judge for yourself whether it is useful as a learning resource. At the end of the day, it could be the best tome on the planet but be written in a style that you find hard to follow. :shrug:

I never knew you could preview books with google, thanks for the tip it looks fucking immense, it's just a shame it's 50 quid. seems like an invaluable reference tool though.

Yup, without google I prpbably wouldn't have got my degree (hihi)

I feel you on the price thing. Second hand it is still £40, so its one of those things on my 'to buy when I'm sorted/rich' list
