Just a quick advice thread really, i'm looking into doing an apprenticeship somewhere, very early days yet still so have yet to decide on something exact but was just wondering if people on here have any experience of being on one, and how they found it, and if they have any crucial do's/don'ts etc.

my mates in the process of finishing his in a year or two, personally i would reccommenf them highly, and you can do them in pratically anything nowdays, JTL is a good one for electricians, I finished mine about a year ago at Hapag Lloyd. The pay is a bit poor till the end, but i suppose thats the whole point of having to qualify. College is always a bit long, 1 day a week normally, but the rest of the week you learn on the job.

I'd like to hear peeps advise about this too. Its difficult to know which company to go with. I tried one but they sent a suit round to my house who was far too smooth for his own good, put me right off.

Hapag Lloyd are a shipping line (what i do now) btw..

also BT offer some good apprenticeships, depends what field your most interested in...

i think the college course is easy to come by, the JOB is the hard part, because i think unless you get offered one by a company themselves, the college's do tend to make you find a job off your own back

aye i guess it depends where you do it as well, a few of the places i have looked at guarantee you a job provided you meet their targets

I'm doing one with BT, it's pretty interesting and i get paid pretty well (especially for an apprentice). I'd definately recommend doing one, get paid to learn and have a pretty much guaranteed job at the end... plus no student debt!

Thats was my problem when I left school, I wanted a few quid to go out and get lashed every weekend, actually nearly every day then.

I remember takin the piss out of one of my pals for doing a car mechanic apprenticeship. Now he works at Lexus on £25 an hour.

ah yes i was looking at the BT one earlier it sounds really good, have they lived up to all the hype in their leaflet?

Yeah it is pretty good, it's well organised because of the size of the company, the college side of it is pretty good as well... and fun because its a week long block release.

I think there is a fair few applicants compared to places but as long as you're fairly confident in the interview and have the right qualifications its not to difficult to get in. Most people start after their A Levels rather than straight from GCSEs as well, although you don't need a levels for most of the positions.

I think it's quite an interesting job as well... plus free broadband and a laptop!

Taken over? Does he work for Openreach? if so that's still part of BT and there is no compulsary redundency.

Im not 2 sure, he told me that the guy who had taken over, sold all the buildings that BT owned, screwed up a hell of a lot in the company, pissed off with a nice leaving pack, and now they have to lease all the buildings back, costing the company millions...or it was something alon those lines not too sure, and basically theyve been closing dept. all over the shop

ahhh... yeah i think that did happen... before my time though. I think job security is pretty good though as the company is massive and i can't see it going anywhere as it owns the whole telephone network.

It's a good apprenticeship anyway, and you only do a 4 day week or 9 day 2 week!!

I think it's office dept. that get closed down and moved to other countries, i'm not to sure though as i'm an engineer and it seems our jobs are pretty secure.

I did an apprenticeship in Printing but Hated printing. For some stupid reason I stuck it out so I'd have something to allways fall back on. I left as soon as I qualified and did some other shit.

Trouble is I could never fall back on it now if I wanted to anyway as the technology has changed so much.

My advice is that apprenticeships are great as long as you want to do the job for many years.

everyone I know that's doing or has finished an apprenticeship is earning shit loads of money (relative to living in Cornwall) and really enjoys it.

I wish I'd done an apprenticeship instead of a shitty national diploma.

oh no, i agree totally, an apprencticeship is the way forward, you will earn shitloads...just hope i do when im older...please dear god..(haha, god )
