It looks like there will be a mandatory evacuation of my city. I am not happy about this. It coud be a Cat 4 storm when it hits. Last time this happened over a million people were made homeless.
I might just stay put and dig in. Undercover French quarter ninja riding out the storm. If there is a mandatory evacuation and you don't leave you risk the cops or army catchin you & throwing you into prison.

I've been watching this too. When I saw that it was headed back to N.O., I was all, "Oh not again!" Please do what you need to take cover. And not that its any consolation....but the best thing we can do is just wait and see how far south of Cuba it rides before re-emerging back into the Gulf. You might have nothing to worry about if the course changes drastically in the next few days.
No matter what, be safe. This storm has some serious power and you need to do what you need to to be alright. I will be sending lots of good thoughts to your city. Not that you really wanna put a Cat 4 anywhere, but I hope New Orleans gets spared this.

New storm tracks have the storm going slightly west... We'll see what happens. Either way I am ready to load up a few semi-trucks with supplies and roll in & can set up a kitchen, emergency shelters, a medic station plus food water and clothing distro. I belong to a coalition of activist groups set up to do short and long term disaster relief in the gulf coast region.

Is Louisiana govt so pathetically organized that emergency relief depends upon volunteer efforts? Isn't Fed govt organized yet? Hard to comprehend.

^not that hard when you consider the large population of poor black americans focused in N.O.
Bush didnt even show up to new orleans last time for ages. They just dont care about this section of society.

These two months are the trade off for having rather mild winters and autumns. I checked NOAA this am and things look good! I will keep my fingers crossed for you and you keep your fingers crossed that the depression that just formed last night doesn't do anything but say hi to Bermuda on its way up north.
Tis the season. I hate this season. I'm so damned sick of being in the Gulf. Get water and gas while the prices are still lower than a month or two ago.

I don't buy that easy write-off. Poor and black don't make you disinterested in your own self-preservation. There's something wrong with the emergency relief structure. Is it corrupt? Insufficiently funded? Having been to Noo Awlyuns, I know they have the knowhow.
Get somebody down to Oz to see how Emergency Services can work.

Its a crazy world. I will stay because i can survive and then go out and help other people with less skills. Only thing I am afraid of is being picked up by some national gaurd or dumbass cops then thrown into jail for not leaving the city.

lol innit. nothing ever happens to us. we don't get hurricanes, we don't get tornados (apart from in birmingham... but fair enough really), we have no killer animals on the loose (except for dogs that shouldn't be here), no mad tropical diseases... we are ALL good. that aside... the weather's fuckin shocking tho. august, AUGUST this is. un-be-liev-able.
