i use Reason..

So i use the Subtractor - 1 Oscillator Sine Wave, adjust the amp envelope settings..fuck around with the filter, I add Distortion (usually Scream) and Chorus...but to no avail..

can anyone help?

maybe different patch in ya scream and fucked around with the damage

808 bassline? what is that lol. Are you talking about a bassline patch that comes with the Roland 808?

I was told thats what the sound is called..could be wrong obv.

Im looking for a sound kind of like the bass line in the tune on this page called Alibi (its not dubstep)

Not sure what you mean. The 808 comes with a few bass patches but I have also heard of people using an 808bd and pitching it down to make a bassline.

You can make it on any synth really. its all in the mod envolopes.

How is it Made?

1>The simplest way of creating an 808 bass is to use samples of the original 808 kick drum. Add distortion & clipping (overdrive) to taste. Search on Freesound, Computer Music magazine cover mount DVD or Google for 808 samples.

It is also possible to synthesize your own 808 bass. This allows for more control over the tone of the sound.

1>Set your synth oscillator to produce a sine wave.
2>Switch to monophonic mode to avoid phase distortion when two notes are played at the same time.
3>On the oscillators amplitude envelope (ADSR), set the Attack, Sustain and Release to zero, then the Decay to between 1 - 2 seconds.
4>Use a second ADSR envelope to modulate the pitch of the oscillator. Once again, set the Attack, Sustain and Release to zero, then the Decay to between 0.5 - 1 second. The pitch needs to drop between 3 and 7 semi tones in around half a second. Make sure the pitch drops to the root note, not the other way around!

Add distortion to taste.

im guessing that what you have heard about is the technique when you take a 808 kick and cut out and loop the sine wave after the attack.
if so its just an old sampling technique people use to create a sub when they dont got a synthesizer aviable.

I've been looking for some decent advice on this for ages, I've never quite been able to get it right myself. Will give this a go.

I'm not sure the sound in the tune posted was an 808, though. Sounded like a fairly standard analog style / reese bass to me. I'm listening on crap speakers, though.

It's possible I accidently pasted my guide to creating a Reese instead of the one for 808... (I didn't follow the tutorial through)

It is also possible that the 808 kick drum sample I was using as refernce whilst creating the tutorial wasn't an 808!!! (But I'm fairly sure it was.... I'll post a link to it later).

Ps, theReese and 808 bass sounds are completely different in character & tone, so my guess is that they cannot be confused..... (I'll check through my tutorial later toi make sure I didn't paste the Reese tutorial)

No no, I meant the sound in the tune Snugfelix linked to on myspace as an example of what he was after sounded more like a slightly wobbly reese than a distorted 808, not the sound in the tutorial...

that's a reese, not an 808. There's plenty tutorials online to find out how to create them

How is it Made?

1>You need a synth with at least two oscillators.
2>Set both oscillators to sawtooth.
3>Detune one oscillator by 10 - 50 cents. (30 cents is perfect!)
4>Pass the sound through a low pass filter with the frequency cut-off point set between 100Hz – 200Hz.

(To protect your speakers & ears, you may wish to insert a limiter into the signal path before the final step.)

5>Turn up the filter resonance to 30% - 70% giving your Reese more warmth.
