On headhunters mix for Radio 1..(clip on his myspace)

http://www.myspace.com/dubstepheadhunter

In the opening tune it kind of sounds as if he has side chained the kick to the pad..Im not sure..

Can someone tell me what this is and how to do it..it sounds bad!

sounds more like the pad has some kind of filter automation and delay going on to me. Not really sure what you are talking about though so i can't say for sure

I cannot hear what your on about but I am listening on headphones.

Sounds like a standard pad with rev/del. Maybe its the way the notes have been written?

Sidechaining a pad is no different than sidechaining a bassline. :) Just play around with settings.

What daw are you using? Sidechaining compresion is just praitaccly automition on the bassline volume.

Sidechaining a pad is quite usual, nothing special. I think...

you can do this in reason by connecting a single hit from redrum to something like subtractor's gate in with a pad patch..

cool trick, but not even necessary if you just copy/print some midi notes on the piano roll..

profound. thank you for your help.

I know how to side chain in Reason, but what I was doing wasnt giving me the same kind of results as what was in that tune, so i think it might be filter automation...

i assume youve already adjusted the attack and release? i dont know what all youve tried, but if you havnt played with the release try that.

this is a bit excessive to be actual sidechaining if you ask me.

looks like an LFO linked to amplitude in the synth, or a volume automation effect. i know cubase has a VST called 'chopper' that produces similar results... it can automate volume in a particular frequency and wave shape.

i'm sure there are some free vst's out there that can do the same.

there are 2 things going on here:

the pad sounds like it is retriggering every 2 bars, and there is a HPF with a descending cutoff each time. it also sounds like there's some sort of white noise component in the patch.

the pad is also being side-chained off the kick drum, with a relatively long release, i'd guess around 200 - 250ms.

here's my rough approximation. this is just a preset off my novation synth, a kick, and a compressor
