Vinyl -> MP3

So, since I have been persuaded not to go looking for tunes on slsk, and i can't be arsed paying for mp3s of records i've already bought, can anyone giveme a bit of help about recording my vinyl to mp3?
basically, i've got various cables and shit, but if i run a lead going from the headphone socket on my hi-fi (no fancy gear here so i dont have any audio-out or anything) into the digital audio socket on my computer, will i get an alright recording? bearing in mind i just want to listen to it on a mp3 player, not make mixes or dj or anythin.
also, what software should i use to record it?
